President Barack Obama's candidates for the Supreme Court include a new name, federal appeals court judge Sidney Thomas of Montana, and at least six others who were considered contenders when Obama chose his first high court nominee last year, The Associated Press has learned.
Among the others under consideration are former Georgia Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears, federal appeals court judges Diane Wood and Merrick Garland, Solicitor General Elena Kagan, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.
The president is seriously reviewing about 10 people as a potential nominee to replace Justice John Paul Stevens, who is retiring this summer.
A senior administration official said the president's consideration is not just centered on the three people receiving the most public attention: Wood, Kagan and Garland. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcements have been made about the people Obama is considering for the court.

And Napolitano? Can he possibly be serious??
How about Michelle?
Maybe he’ll practice some Arlen Sphincter Scottish law.
Franklin Roosevelt was born in the United States (appointed Felix Frankfurter, born in Austria) Warren Harding was born in the United States (appointed George Sutherland, born in England) Chester Arthur was born in the United States (appointed David Josiah Brewer, born in Turkey) I could go on, but you get the idea.
HUH? What blather.
Whoever it is will merely be a second vote for Sotomayor. Why not just give her two votes and dispense with the charade. I am sure though that the American people will rally to Obama’s latest choice.
Wasn’t Tom Sawyer’s homosexual cousin named Sidney?
Thank God Leaphart is retiring. Perhaps Montana still stands a chance...
OBL would be a good match for the thugs in this White House and Congress. Enemies are enemies are enemies of freedom
I’ve never heard of Sidney Thomas. He’s a judge on the 9th. Circus Court of Appeals and he authored the decision Nadarajah v. Gonzalez.
A new name has surfaced in the SCOTUS speculation. I don’t know if the Obama Administration is just blowing smoke or if it plans to choose a stealth nominee.
Nothing surprises me anymore about this bunch
I don’t know what to think about this news item.
