Richard Dawkins: I Will Arrest Pope Benedict XVI

April 11, 2010 Richard Dawkins: I Will Arrest Pope Benedict XVI Marc Horne

Atheist campaigner Richard Dawkins RICHARD DAWKINS, the atheist campaigner, is planning a legal ambush to have the Pope arrested during his state visit to Britain “for crimes against humanity”.

Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, the atheist author, have asked human rights lawyers to produce a case for charging Pope Benedict XVI over his alleged cover-up of sexual abuse in the Catholic church.

The pair believe they can exploit the same legal principle used to arrest Augusto Pinochet, the late Chilean dictator, when he visited Britain in 1998.

The Pope was embroiled in new controversy this weekend over a letter he signed arguing that the “good of the universal church” should be considered against the defrocking of an American priest who committed sex offences against two boys. It was dated 1985, when he was in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which deals with sex abuse cases.

Dark sides, such as trading in indulgences, dark sides such as carving up territory between petty rulers, dark sides such as the very issue that’s confronting the RCC right now.

None of which have Scriptural support regardless of what denomination practiced it. That is the dark side of the church involved in it, not the dark side of the teachings of the religion (for lack of a better word). The Bible does not condone acts such as those that are practiced in the name of Christianity like koran condones the evils practiced in the name of islam.

You need to learn the difference between the man made institutions which practice sin like that in the name of Christ and the actual teachings of Biblical Christianity.

There will always be corruption when humans indulge in any activity. Please don’t pretend as if the RCC has never had a tainted history.

I know and I'm not.

Truth is something you are apparently having a hard time discerning since you refuse to differentiate between the acts perpetrated in the name of religion and what the Bible actually teaches.

Not any more....

But that decision was made a long time ago and before this stuff came out in the open.

Who else bought it?

If.....

Even IF, I am not tossing out my faith.

If a Republican tosses trash on your lawn are you going to become a Democrat?

Of nearly two thousand years of the Church's existence, I am supposed to toss my faith over the alleged actions of one man?

Get thee behind me, Satan!

If I was going to discard my faith, maybe I would have done it over some of the Medieval actions of the Church, but wait, no one is selling indulgences any more. Nevermind.

The deceiver throws new things, old things in new wrappers at the Church all the time, and to deal with that the Church must adapt. Such adapationa do not necessitate fundamental changes in belief, only in the way events are dealt with.

As I said, no organization composed of humans will ever be perfect, but it is one steadfast in its opposition to abortion and homosexual union, and yes, even pedophillia, regardless of how badly incidents may have been dealt with by individual humans within the Church.

That the attack continues against Catholicism makes it more obvious to me that those who are bringing that attack, the vampires of the media who make their living off the blood of victims daily, who only seek to fill their bellies over the corpses of the dead (while dropping the cliffhanger so you will watch the soap commercials long enough to see the rest), who number among them many who just might engage in acts every bit as repugnant as any they accuse the Church of covering up, just might have an agenda of their own.

Namely, to remove the last bastion of opposition to their own pet perversions, ones which other Churches have 'compromised' on, but the Catholic Church has not.

I see no media crusade to disband the public schools, yet we hear monthly or more often of incidents of pedophillia in them, and we know not how many of those have been covered up. These are events of twenty years or more ago.

Ultimately, we will all stand before God, the ultimate judge. Until then, I will stand with the Church as it deals with the foibles some of its clergy may have, because I see little better, and certainly not enough to make me become apostate.

YMMV

The Catholic Church needs to cease it's practice of not allowing Priest to marry. It is unBiblical and they are reaping the consequences.

I do not think that would weigh in on the issue of homosexual pedophillia one way or the other.

What difference would normal marriage make in the compulsion in a very few to perform unnatural acts?

Had the offender(s) only wanted to engage in what most of us define as sex, we would not even be having this discussion.

For some reason I thought the authorities weren't notified because who ever was in charge had found out through a confession.

In some cases it came up in the confessional, in others the crime itself took place in the confessional - both of those situations become more complicated by virtue of that. Most were found out in other ways.

It's easy to understand in a huge organization why every personnel decision doesn't have to go to the top. What's hard to figure is why nobody thought going to the police was a good idea, or am I wrong and most crimes were reported?

I don't know about either of those. Certainly there was a time when these issues were dealt with more justly in house than out of it - and we have found out the hard way that we are no longer in it. And then there were other cases (the one with the Milwaukee school for deaf boys comes to mind) where the police investigated, and couldn't find enough evidence to make an arrest.

Do we really have to be so PC that the obvious needs to be stated with every post. Of course all allegations need to be investigated and if the individual is found guilty why not worry about the perpetrators human dignity behind prison walls.

If we must call it "PC" so be it, but in this issue, yes, we do. The media hasn't been making this distinction - certainly this judgment by Dawkins on the Pope is one of the more egregious cases. I'm not sure that all of the posters here are willing to grant it either.

An anti-Catholic bias (or in Dawkins' case an anti-religion bias) to often has infected the opinion of the critics on all fronts - including the criticism from progressive "Catholics" who wish to use this scandal as a means of changing the Church's doctrines.

I see no reason for the Catholic Church to demand that its priests be unmarried.

Peter wasn’t.

A black evil pope is supposedly next.

The prophecy reads as such:

"In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Peter the Roman, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations, after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people. The End."

Nothing about a "black evil pope". In addition, this last part of the prophecy is believed to be a later addition. The pope called "Gloria Olivae", which corresponds with Pope Benedict, is believed to be the last on the oldest manuscripts of the list.

If you're going to use it... at least get it right

I see no reason for the Catholic Church to demand that its priests be unmarried.

But Jesus was unmarried, we have no certainty that Peter's wife was alive by the time of the Gospel, and then there is the whole issue of becoming "a eunuch for the sake of the Kingdom" among others.

I don't have time to explain all of the reasonings, but here is a document written by Pope Paul VI that gives explanations - some theological, and if I recall correctly, some practical.

Sacerdotalis Caelibatus

I don't know a whole lot about this Dawkins fellow other then that he is an atheist activist but I do find the two Hitchens brothers to be very talented writers of which I enjoy to read. I do not remember which of the Hitchens brothers made the statement that if you are going to be an atheist, is it better to be an atheist in a Christian dominated society or an islamic dominated society? The question is rhetorical.

It's not unbiblical. St. Paul said that if you are unmarried when you are born again, you should stay that way. Presumably the call to the priestly vocation comes to a young man before he is married.

No, I meant “animal”, not “organism.”

Are you an atheist, or do you just hate the pope and/or Catholics and/or Christians? Do you approve of child molesters as long as they’re not religious in any respect? Many do, including members of NAMBLA. You seem to have the same fundamental in your opinion on this subject.

Half of me hopes he’d go through with it, just to see the spectacle. I wonder if the World Court would adjudicate such a dispute? Can the Pope counter-arrest Dawkins for something like promoting a false religion (scientism)? Maybe the pope is missing some good opportunities to educate & elucidate here by ignoring this gadfly.
