Richard Dawkins: I Will Arrest Pope Benedict XVI

April 11, 2010 Richard Dawkins: I Will Arrest Pope Benedict XVI Marc Horne

Atheist campaigner Richard Dawkins RICHARD DAWKINS, the atheist campaigner, is planning a legal ambush to have the Pope arrested during his state visit to Britain “for crimes against humanity”.

Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, the atheist author, have asked human rights lawyers to produce a case for charging Pope Benedict XVI over his alleged cover-up of sexual abuse in the Catholic church.

The pair believe they can exploit the same legal principle used to arrest Augusto Pinochet, the late Chilean dictator, when he visited Britain in 1998.

The Pope was embroiled in new controversy this weekend over a letter he signed arguing that the “good of the universal church” should be considered against the defrocking of an American priest who committed sex offences against two boys. It was dated 1985, when he was in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which deals with sex abuse cases.

This is the unspeakable depths to which the British have sunk to.

I'm sure you can find Americans who would try the same stunt. In fact, Hitchens is a U.S. citizen.

As unspeakable as a pope ignoring complaints of sexual abuse by a priest?

It's as unspeakable as lying about the Pope ignoring complaints of sexual abuse by a priest

So why would a drunken atheist think that sex with teenage boys is wrong? On what basis is he making that statement?

Think about it, he is using natural law, and he rejects the same law everywhere else.

Though I hope the Pope has a back up plan. I suspect the EU will try to do something in the near future.

But the Roman Catholic Church has sheltered the worst types of criminals - child molesters

By what kind of twisted logic do you conclude that a child molester is worse criminal than an abortionist?

And, please notice, that our government actively shelters abortionists, spits in God's face by calling their crimes "Constitutional rights", and has done so for almost 40 years now.

It is too bad that Bishops can not be defrocked. Weakland is deserving of it, during this whole affair, he was having his own homosexual affair, stealing thousand of dollars in church funds to pay off his lover.

Bishops can be removed, but it's a very serious thing and never done for something trivial.

Weakland's homosexual affair and his payoff (he paid the money back, BTW) came out after his retirement. If it had come out much earlier, he probably would have been removed or forced to resign, IMO.

He was an awful bishop, and the general reaction among FR Catholics when he retired was, Deo gratias ("Thanks be to God!").

Richard Dawson is NOT a fundamentalist - He is an atheist. Get your nomenclature correct, please.

Napoleon tried something like that. It didn't work out too well for him. ;-)

He didn’t cover up and he didn’t lie. You think he did? Prove it. Because the NYT article that proffered this was full of absolute mistakes, innuendos and outright lies.

What's the point of arresting the Pope? They'll just elect another and besides, there are still thousands of bishops running around out there. Shouldn't we arrest them as well? To get to the root of the problem, I think so.

Then there's the millions of Catholic faithful who actively defend the Pope and run interference for him. Shouldn't something be done about them, also? I believe so. I think some sort of "re-education" programs are in order for Catholics. Compulsory, re-education. Failure to comply will result in heavy fines, confiscation of property and/or imprisonment. They will be required to attend classes and learn about the dangers of organized religion, the right to abortion, homosexual "marriage", the myth of God and the beauty of secularism..

That should fix the problem.

What say you FReepers? Let's solve this Catholic problem once and for all!!

“I was being sarcastic. If Richard Dawkins can arrest the pope, then, following his logic, I can arrest Richard Dawkins.”

I appreciate sarcasm, but in this case I’m not sure it works. Dawkins and Hitchins plan to arrest the Pope for an alleged, crime. What would be the alleged crime you’d arrest Dawkins for?

See what I mean? I’m probably being to picky, but it’s why it looked to me like you would arrest Dawkins just for what he said.

Hank

I always find that people who become violent towards non believers invariably have issues with their own faith.

Are you sure you're not just making this up?

Go ahead, Chrissy and Dick. Bigger men than you have tried. Nero, Francis I, Napoleon. They’re all gone. We’re still here.
