Why should you have to police people, when it's the government's job, and why do we tolerate a government that actively subverts the law?
In your position as a GC, you would know or eventually find out the situation of your employees. Would your customers? Do you expect them to take time from their own affairs to examine the residency of people who come and go in their lives during the course of business?
I used to write mortgage loans. I had a situation one time where we were ready to close escrow -- loan fully approved and funded -- when a final credit check by FannieMae showed that the SSN of the applicant may have been fraudulent.
The borrower admitted he bought the SSN 15 years earlier and had been living in the US with it all that time. The entire credit history was his. Only the name wasn't. If he had been a registered alien (back in the old days) he would have been a US citizen by now! And isn't that what we really want anyway?

Mitt Romney was always pro amnesty and he was busted in 2006 and exposed in a national story revealing that he had been using a crew of illegal Guatemalans at his home for 10 years, speaking to them in Spanish and encouraging his sons to hire them.
After Romney’s illegal alien scandal blew over, Romney was in a debate a year later, in 2007 when Rudy Giuliani accused Romney of running a “Sanctuary Mansion”, Romney blustered and lied to the nation feigning shock and proclaiming that it wasn’t true in an effort to survive the televised debate.
A few days after the debate, the Boston Globe sent a reporter over to look at Romney’s “Sanctuary Mansion” and sure enough the same crew of illegals that everyone thought that Mitt had fired, during the huge scandal the year before, were still there.
This brought to 11 years and through a national media scandal, and a nationally televised debate denial, that Mitt Romney was still using the illegal Guatemalan workmen to maintain his home’s grounds.
