Mitt Romney Wins GOP Presidential Straw Poll

NEW ORLEANS -- Mitt Romney won the straw poll at the Southern Republican Leadership conference here Saturday in a victory that will be taken as a sign of the former Massachusetts governor's strength as a 2012 presidential candidate.

That's because the 2008 GOP presidential hopeful elected to skip the conference to continue his book tour.

Romney triumphed by a single vote over Ron Paul, who took second place 439 votes to 438. Both men won 24 percent of the vote. Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich essentially tied for third with 18 percent of the vote each.

People mistakenly believe that because Mitt is an investment banker that he must therefore know something about economics.

Brilliant!

"2nd Division Vet.. who do you see winning the GOP Presidential Straw Poll? Huckabee? Can not even remember the Old guys name that is married to the young woman.. who every one on Free Republic promoted to be President..that did not even get out of the gate.. you know..what’s his name...?"

Good old Senator Fred Thompson got into the race too late (he had contractual obligations at Law and Order). He did about as well as Governor Willard "Mitt" Romney, which is to say, he wasn't nominated. On the other hand, I don't believe he spent tens of millions of his own money to get there, or did I miss something? Governor Romney has RomneyCare, his religious faith, abortion, RTKBA, racial issues and his general non-conservatism holding him back. As someone who spent half his life in Iowa and it's politics, I'm not very impressed by a straw poll, which is a couple of steps down from an Internet poll like the ones we FReep all the time.

There's problems with every one of them because there are never "trouble-free" candidates. Conservatives don't elect messiahs.

We've changed so much in the last 1.5 years. Constitutional conservatism is not just an item on the conservative wish list. It's now a fight for the nation's survival. Who will take-up the mantle?

Wow, what an argument.

Mississippi is Republican red state, that doesn't have Romneycare, and yet you call it "podunk."

LOL..

Where exactly is the ignorance?

Everything I have posted is fact.

Romney continues to praise and take credit for his health care plan that you say is not his.

Maybe you should be telling Mitt he is wrong instead of us.

I think that would give you a better definition of ignorance, yours...

J Doutrider.. hey.. I know that Mitt Romney has a better chance of being President than Fred Thompson... wish others on this site would wake up and smell reality. HELLO>>>>>> anyone out here realize that Fred Thompson will never ever be President of the U.S. of America? Fred did not even come close to Mitt Romney in the last Presidential Primary.. now that he is four years older do you think he has a better chance? Nothing against Fred Thompson.. I like the man, but he ran a horrible campaign and is not even motivated to be President of the USA

Don’t you remember? Mitty pulled over and cried when he heard that blacks could become Mormon priests. Maybe they weren’t tears of joy and relief? ;-)
