Electro Magnetic Pulse. It’s a device that wipes out all electronics in the vicinity. I did a term paper last semester on the fall out of a large EMP (a nuke detonated in the air, not on the ground) that would wipe out a large city and the electronics are fried. That would account for the problems with the pilot reading the instruments and the cell phones not working.

....calling Bond...James Bond........... this tragedy looks like something right out of a late sixties Bond film to me.
BUT there would be similar occurrences on the ground too! You cannot control the selectivity of an EMP.
