Osprey Crash in Afghanistan Kills 3 Troops, Civilian
American Forces Press Service ^

A U.S. Air Force CV-22 Osprey crashed in southern Afghanistan late last night, killing three U.S. servicemembers, one civilian employee and injuring numerous other servicemembers.

The cause of the crash is unknown, officials with NATO’s International Security Assistance Force said.

Officials said the aircraft was carrying U.S. troops when it crashed seven miles west of Qalat City in Zabul province. The injured were transported to a nearby base for medical treatment.

The CV-22, a modified version of the Marine Corps MV-22, conducts long-range infiltration and resupply for U.S. forces. It employs tilt-rotor technology that allows it to take off and land as a helicopter, and fly like a fixed-wing aircraft.

Many conservatives say that defense is about the only thing gov't does well.

While some parts work, procurement certainly does not, thanks in large part to congress & corruption (but I repeat myself).

Osprey, F-35, Seawolf, KC-X, M-14, uniforms, lousy vehicles, UAV mishmash, green ammo, C-17, Future Combat System and on and on and on.

It's a damned wonder we can still break things and kill people.

When I heard the news report of the crash I was reminded that the Navy version of the Osprey has had all sorts of problems and has been involved in numerous crashes and losses of life through the years. But I somehow thought they had gotten all the bugs out of the machine. Apparently not. It must be a very unforgiving aircraft to operate........like the jet fighter that GWB flew, and which his C.O. said was one of the most difficult and unforgiving jets to fly.....and that GWB was actually a very good fighter pilot!

You're confused.

and has been involved in numerous crashes and losses of life through the years.

Three fatal accidents since first flight in March of 1989, the last of which occurred in December of 2000. How many H-60s have suffered Class A mishaps during the same period?

“It’s a damned wonder we can still break things and kill people. “

Yeah but breaking always starts at home first...

“Three fatal accidents since first flight in March of 1989, the last of which occurred in December of 2000. “

The biggest of which was a result of pilot error.

Thanks, AAC. I appreciate your reply to correct the misconceptions about the Osprey. There were some early accidents during the life of the V-22. I recall one night operation that was pilot error and one in NC that was due to a pinhole leak in a fuel hardline.

I worked at Bell and was involved in the early days (late 1970s) of development of tilt rotor technology which produced the XV-15, which is now in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in DC.

Before I retired in late 2001, I worked closely with NAVAIR in developing logbooks for the V-22, including the New River training base in NC and presentations to MV-22 squadrons in Amarillo TX..

Both the MV-22 and CV-22 versions have proven themselves and the USMC and USAF officers and enlisted praise them highly. ....Iraq did pose some maintenance problems because of the sand, but that was dealt with and in Afghanistan the V-22 has done a fantastic job of moving troops and equipment in spite of the difficult terrain.

and one in NC that was due to a pinhole leak in a fuel hardline.

Ruptured hydraulic line with aircrew error as a contributing factor in the loss of the aircraft. Either Sweaney or Murphy repeatedly toggled the FCS reset; a procedure which was contrary to NATOPS, which exacerbated the FCS software anomalies.

Thanks for refreshing my memory. It WAS a hydraulic line.

Cancel this waste of money already. or rename it the V-22 congressional lemon.

As an aircraft engineer, I know the V-22 is a piss poor design. In spite of what some here say. Even with extra light duty and falsified maintenance it can’t be stopped from unnecessarily killing our own troops. Only an artist would put the rotors on the wingtips. Just an incredibly stupid unstable and unnecessarily complicated layout.

The V-22 is still a poorly thought out under-performing piece of crap. Time for you to call me names again for pointing it out. Can we get a V-22 for “Marine 1”. LOL

No need to accurately point out that you suffer from cranial rectumitis. You do a more than adequate job doing that all by your lonesome, scheisskopf.

By the way, how many hours have you logged in an Osprey?
