There wasn’t a BIRTH requirement. ANYONE who was a citizen at the time of Adoption (“No person except a natural born Citizen, OR a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution...”) could become President, even if they or their parents had been born elsewhere.
At that point, those with British sympathies had mostly moved to Canada or England, per the terms of the treaty ending the War of Independence, and the UK agreed to not consider such persons as wished to stay in the US as British Subjects, even though they had been (reneged on that though, leading to the War of 1812). But prior to then, there was no United States to have been born in. Sure there were British North American colonies, including Canada, but no United States.
