This brings up an interesting issue...
My wife and I have just completed the requirements for the Texas CCL and are awaiting the cards. I did a little research on the other states where we could legally ‘pack’.
Texas grants recognition to other states that have similar license requirements. I believe that the course requirement would be a major consideration on granting reciprocity.
I expect some of the other states would look hard at the no class requirement also. (darn, every time I write ‘no class’ I think of zero.)
FYI, if you can legally own a handgun in Texas you can carry it in your vehicle without a permit provided it is kept in the glove compartment or console; under the seat or some other cubby hole is not acceptable.
Since neither my wife or I are ‘gun nuts’, we enjoyed the ten hours of handgun instruction. We are not unarmed but I look at guns as another necessary tool to protect my interest in the country along with my tractor, chain saw, and shovel; don’t get in front of my full choke magnum shotgun or rifle.
I also have a barely legal shotgun and 9mm pistol in my MUV (side by side ATV) in case I have to go invite someone off the land... Just tools...
Our best protection, however, is our seven dogs, three of which have big mouths. We had a stranger get out of his car and head for our door a couple of days ago; I have never before seen anyone move that fast getting back to his car.
I just found out that you are required to take a parenting class before you are allowed to divorce...
Sure....
Dog!!! You beat me to it!
Not at all. This new law in no way effects the CCW permit process (except to make it optional for AZ carry). The permit process will still exist and the qualifications will still be the same, specifically for those who want to get permits and use them for reciprocity.
“...Since neither my wife or I are gun nuts, ...”
Define “gun nut”, please...
Is that like, an American CITIZEN who exercises his/her right to own and carry a firearm? Or someone who has the temerity to own more than one or two firearms??? Or someone who appreciates and defends the historical rights and traditions of Americans that are denied to, oh, say 90% of the rest of the world???
I’m in EVERY category I mentioned above. I carry daily, so as to be a better responsible CITIZEN, a first responder as it were, in case of a life-threatening emergency involving either myself or those around me. That’s one of the duties, obligations, and responsibilities of citizenship.
There’s NOTHING “gun nut” about that. There’s EVERYTHING AMERICAN about that.
I think you need to avoid using the language of the enemy when referring to a basic human right that people DIED to preserve. The socialist left tries very hard to paint us as “nuts” - that would be “insane”, “unstable”, “dangerous” etc.
And in the current atmosphere, where the government just totally took over the health care system (and that INCLUDES mental health care) - being painted as a “nut” can be a very dangerous thing.
You help them when you use their language.
You’re bad, LOL. :-)
Hey, mancini! How ya been?
I am good, P. How are you these days?
Enjoying life. Still FReepin. I enjoyed the rain, but the weeds were awful....
:^)
THE WEEDS, oy. I am finally getting a handle on my allergy problems that have been growing since moving here (25 years ago!). It would be nice if we had a somewhat “cool” summer. Ya know, make it more comfortable to carry all the guns now!
Yeah, it’s hard to conceal carry in a tank-top.
However, Mrs Liberty has a 2-shot .22 derringer type thing. You have to disassemble it to load it, and the blowout burns my fingers every time it’s shot, but...
I think it’s wise for city folk who don’t know jack about firearms to take a class, but for we folks who grew up in the sticks shooting beer bottles off fence posts and drove our daddy’s pickup with a shotgun or rifle in the back window rack to school every day, it’s really not necessary.
I’d still like to see ghetto scum and gangbangers take a class, if for no other reason than to improve their aim at each other.
I wasn't thinking about the "learn to fire a weapon without losing your eyebrows" part of the training so much as the "learn what's legal with regard to armed self defense in your state" part.
Sounds like you are a little defensive...
As you can tell from my reply, I own and use guns, but as tools not toys...
I have several long term friends who live and breath guns, not of the sports category, and I always have the feeling when I am around them that they would love to have an excuse to shoot someone. At least two of them are paranoid to the extreme and if a psychiatric test was required to get a CHL, they would not qualify.
Then I have other gun-loving friends that I have no problem with, one of which is a dealer and another taught the CHL class I recently took.
In Texas, especially the rural areas, you would have a very short list of people to chose as friends if you limited it by their positive attitude toward guns.
The Texas CHL laws were enacted primarily because of the Lubby Massacre in Killeen in which Susanna Huff’s parents were killed. She became the driving force in the enactment of the law(s). I live 15 miles from the Luby’s location and less than five miles from the perp’s house.
BTW, I spent several hours and several boxes of ammo yesterday afternoon teaching my grand daughter the basics of hand guns prior to her CHL class next week.
My wife and I will make sure she has a need for the CHL as soon as she passes the test.
I worked with my daughter two weeks ago on her brand new 2.5 inch Taurus ‘The Judge’ and also in prepping her for the CHL class.
A 3 inch ‘Judge’ is my next major purchase and bedside companion.
Now with all of that said, I, and others, frequently use the term ‘nut’ in lieu of ‘hobbyist’; I refer to myself as a weather ‘nut’ quite often because of my ongoing fascination with meteorology... Perhaps I should have been more sensitive in a gun related thread...
I, like you, am most concerned about the ‘NUT’ in the White House with what was the biggest self defense tool in the world at his command.
Yeah....learn it so we can work to change the laws in our respective states to conform to the 2A.
“...Sounds like you are a little defensive...”
You are correct. All gun owners should be. Using the language of the enemy helps the other side, not us.
“...but as tools not toys...”
Mine are not toys, either. I grew up around them, was thoroughly trained on use and handling, and carry one every day. It’s most definitely NOT a toy. Anyone that regards it as such shouldn’t be allowed to own one.
“I have several long-term friends...they would love to have an excuse to shoot someone...”
Maybe you should get some new friends, then. But guns aren’t their issue. Their issue is obviously themselves.
“...Luby’s...Susanna Hupp...”
I’m very familiar with her. She’s a HUGE positive influence for good for us, especially when she took on Schumer and the other communist trash in Congress. Her tragedy was horrible and could have been prevented; instead of letting it destroy her, she used it to help start to restore a fundamental American right that has been under continuous assault for 70+ years now.
“...Perhaps I should have been more sensitive in a gun related thread...”
Absolutely you should. Everything you posted in response to me is extraneous; I never said you weren’t pro-gun, and you need not prove it; I said that using the language of the enemy, especially out here in the ‘Zone, gives them more ammunition. Like “see, SEE! Even some of THEM call them Gun Nuts!!!”
No quarrel with you brother. If I sound harsh, it’s because I’ve been fighting ,this battle for over 15 years now, and I am VERY “defensive” over every square inch of ground we’ve covered. And we have a covered a LOT; 43 states now agree with carry, and that is a HUGE gain (regardless of whether or not they were violating your Constitutional right in the first place - it’s still a huge gain).
We’re in a war of words and culture with people who are ruthless and brutal smear merchants, and who are masters at it. Don’t help them any.

True enough. The bill that's the thread's topic is a perfect example of that.
