Escape From L.A. (Unified)
IBD's Capital Hill ^ | 4/8/2010 | Ed Carson

The Los Angeles Unified School District this week backed down from a controversial proposal to slash the number of students it lets transfer to other districts. Supt. Ramon C. Cortines said Tuesday that most students who attend schools outside of the district can continue to do so next year, a retreat from a recent, more restrictive policy that provoked an outcry from parents, other school districts and some members of his own Board of Education. But this is only a tactical withdrawal. Cortines will be back with a new plan in the fall. The reason is simple: money.

Rather than improve the schools and weed out bad instructors to make families want to stay, L.A. Unified and the teachers union would prefer to run the district like a prison or Soviet republic, preventing parents and children from escaping to better schools.

Parents, do what I did...

Me: I’d like an inter-district transfer for my child.

Superintendent: I’m sorry, but for budget reasons I can not allow that.

Me: That is your prerogative. For the record be aware that if you force my child to go to your under performing school, she will be taping what goes on in your classrooms and post it on You Tube.

He signed the transfer papers right after that.

Eventually, common sense and reason take over.

I recall an event from childhood (early 50’s) when those of us that went to the Catholic School were not allowed to ride the Public School buses.

The problem was ‘resolved’ when the Parish decided that they would have to close the school (1-12 grades) and deposit the students into the public system.

Not long after, the County/Town (NY) agreed that the students going to the Catholic School could ride the bus as long as they went to an existing stop...

The line up of the schools was Public High School at upper end of street, the Parochial School in the middle of the block and the Grade School at the bottom of the street and with mostly half empty buses, the solution really was a win for everyone.

Amazing how the public school conglomerate always ignores the fact that parents of parochial school students also pay property taxes and should have access to the assets that those taxes provide.

They don’t understand the system is in its last throes.

They keep thinking children in schools, mean more money from the government.Meaning they can hire more staff and keep playing the situation.

They’re idiots.
