And there will be a backlash. They have no real defense and no real excuse. It would be best to plea bargain, spend time in jail, and then face a lifetime of penance.

The problem the prosecution faces is that there is no solid law on the books against “bullying.” So what the DA basically did was throw a cocktail together of various charges. The first battle the DA has to fight is to show that these charges are relevent to the case at hand. The 2nd battle would be linking them together to prove a pattern of behavior that ultimately lead to the girl killing herself as a result. You may think this is an obvious conclusion, but these things can get tricky in court. There runs a lot of risk of technicalities.

The defense also doesnt have an easy road. They have to try and separate the bullying from the suicide and/or somehow try to show what the bullies did was no different than normal teenager quarrals, that Pheobe over-reacted by killing herself, and that there was no way for them to know she would do that.

A jury is going to have an awful lot of stuff to go over.

Either way, these teens have a record now. Any future employer does a background check, this is going to come up. So this could haunt them for quite some time.
