You can not force acceptance. The more they try the angrier everyone else gets. 30 years ago, gays were far more accepted then they are today. People always knew but it just wasn't talked about, so everyone accepted Aunt Vivian and her "roomate" and cousin George and his "friend". Nobody shunned them they just didn't acknowledge any difference.
Look at what you have today instead. You have angry people on both sides.
