CA: State considers repealing 1950 law to study, cure gays

SACRAMENTO — California lawmakers narrowly advanced a bill today that would repeal a state law designed to find the causes and cures of homosexuality.

The law, written in 1950, classifies homosexuals as "sexual deviants" and requires the state Department of Mental Health to conduct research on "deviations conducive to sex crimes against children." The research would be used to help identify potential sex offenders.

The bill moved out of the Assembly Committee on Public Safety on a 4-0 vote, with one Democrat and two Republican members abstaining from voting. They said the law's reference to homosexuality should be removed but that they want the state to continue researching sex crimes.

California put the law on the books as a response to public outcry after a series of sex crimes in Los Angeles, which included the rape and murder of a 6-year-old girl. The murderer, who openly confessed his crime, was not gay.

The fact still remains that a higher percentage of the homosexual community commit sex abuse crimes than non-homosexuals. I am so glad I moved out of CA. I returned once for my grandmother's funeral but I will never again enter that state.

Interesting. Homosexuality has gone from a crime to a mental disorder to a civil right in the span of what, 25 years?

I assume the Department never carried out their charge.

It’s a worthwhile study, although I’m thinking a biochemical/genetic approach would likely be more fruitful. What if root causes could be found? What if it could be cured? So many people would be so much happier in life.

less than that in CA; homosexuality was still a crime when I was a child there, but a right in high school.

I think if it was a biochemical/genetic cause, it would not be considered a sin.

God wouldn’t outlaw some handicap you were born with.

Yep. In the early 1970’s my mother got sole custody and my father had to have supervised visitation (with a female) because he was gay. His lover was not to be anywhere near me.

By the late 1980’s, our High School (mine and mrreaganaut’s) banned a support group for children with gay parents because it made the gay kids upset.

Wow - a gay dad. Sorry to hear this.

You provide first hand information that homosexuality was a crime (or at the least was considered freakish) in the not-that-long-ago past.

How the hell did this country get to where it is?

On a related issue the Administration is in the process of repealing of “don’t ask, don’t tell”. Those who advocate that decision and who want to do away with this law rely for foundational credibility on the 1973 decision by the American Psychological Association (APA) to remove homosexuality from its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). Removal responded to a two year campaign Newsweek described as ongoing disruptive, chaotic attacks on psychiatrists and physiologists. Yet at this annual meeting and throughout this period of disruptive attacks, no papers were presented refuting any research previously done. Eventually a third of APA’s 17,000 plus membership voted for removal. The under-voting and public attacks support the understanding that the decision came through intimidation, and not as a result of scientific reasoning.

After this mercurial, but unsubstantiated, decision a task force was established to ensure perpetual sanctity for this APA action. No papers would again arise to confirm the extensive prior research substantiating 7 of 10 homosexuals could walk away from the lifestyle forever. This new task force would set standards for pier revue of articles to ensure appropriate flexibility in design definitions, outcomes, and analytical models. Acceptable pre-ordained theses would compile selected human data points, using selected questions and behaviors, and arrive at approved incites.

Psychology and Psychiatry have always had a tenuous hold on claims they were sciences with the standing of Chemistry and Physics. On the scale of intellectual rigor, their research more often resembles oral history, and seldom, if ever, approaches the determinism found in a Chemistry laboratory.

The developments in statistics should have enabled them to a least determine there is a marginal or significant propensity for a particular disorder, for specific behaviors, and for selecting methods of treatment. Responsible research should also acknowledge those pesky humans, who in spite of their genetics and upbringing, decide to live positive lives without APA professional help.

Instead, Psychology and Psychiatry have chosen to abandon all pretense of scientific rigor in exchange for popular societal and political acclaim. The barriers erected to meaningful research about homosexuality remind me of Genesis 3:23-24. In these verses the Lord God banished humanity from the Garden of Eden and placed an angel in the Garden to keep humanity away forever. By their actions, Psychology and Psychiatry appear content within their own Garden of Eden. They seem to consider the accoutrements of a religion to be more attractive than those of a science.

The current debate over “don’t ask, don’t tell” languishes for the inability of these two disciplines to make a meaningful contribution. They should lead a debate, which would examine whether any mental disorders are acceptable for people seeking or retaining military service. Military service should always be the ultimate meritocracy to compete successfully against enemies unconcerned with social engineering.

My specific interest in this subject originates with taking a 500 level statistics course for my MBA at the University of Oregon during 1973 and 1974. Because of that course, I could particularly join in the lament over this woefully unsupported decision expressed by a Psychology professor, who published text books including the subject of homosexuality. I could in general join his lament, because of training in the classic scientific method as part of my undergraduate Chemistry major. I’m also a former Navy officier. Below is a link to an article discussing the APA action.

Thanks, but it was my father’s choice and he lived (and died) with the consquences (AIDS).

As far has how far this country has fallen so fast, liberal media and an education system that focus on brainwashing rather than teaching.

Both MrR and I were self taught and only went to school because it was required. I graduated as soon as I legally could at the time (age 16) and went to college because I couldn’t stand HS.

MrR and I joke that we were the only other smart people we knew in school, which is why we got married. :D

I know that this will probably be used as proof to have me hauled off to a re-education camp, but this is one of the few sensible laws left on CA’s books. Gays recruit. I’m sorry if that offends non-recruiting gays, but think back. Were you helped to ‘understand your true orientation’ by an older male? You were recruited when you were underage; that’s against the law because you were so impressionable. Often, gays ‘help’ younger men or boys as they were ‘helped,’ continuing the cycle without admitting its harm. It’s shameful to be a victim - we don’t say “don’t blame the victim” for no reason - but by denying abuse, abusers get away with it.

I have yet to find a gay man that wasn’t recruited by an older man.

In med school we had a course on human sexuality. One of the panelists talked about how his dad used to rape him as a boy. He grew up and became a homosexual. I’m sure it had a little bit to do with his proclivities.

Wow - so much valuable information - thank you very much!

Bottom line is homosexuality is a freakish, perverted and cursed existence.

You have much expertise in what you write - thank you for sharing your knowledge and spreading the truth!

Sorry to hear that.

You’re exactly right - the combo of media and education are a destructive entity.

That’s awesome about you and mrreaganaut - good to see some like-minded people that ‘find’ each other! Bravo!

Don’t worry, honey, I’ll be sent with you.

I cannot count the number of times I was hit on by lesbians growing up.

Exactly. Like the NAMBLA book “How I learned to Snap” where a gay man praises the older gay man who ‘helped’ him accept he was gay when he was 14.

I have seen it over and over again.

MrR and I grew up in a high gay pop area. We have known several hundred gay men in our lives. I have yet to befriend one who didn’t finally admit they were physically, sexually, or emotionally abused as a child by either a male or a domineering female. Most often sexually.

Thanks. I hate to use the term ‘soul mates’ because it is so liberal sounding, but we are. We are each other’s ‘other half’. It tends to freak other people out, even our families. We acted like an ‘old married couple’ before we were even really dating.

We met when we were 3 (our parents sent us to the same preschool) and our paths kept crossing until we realized that God was trying to tell us something and finally started dating. That was almost 20 years ago.
