Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has started a program he calls "Pedal Vision," in which inmates pedal stationary bikes to generate electricity for television sets.
The bikes are customized to turn on connected TV sets once inmates at Phoenix's Tent City Jail pedal enough to generate 12 volts of electricity.
An hour of pedaling equals an hour of television.
Arpaio says inmates only will be able to watch television if they choose to pedal.
He says he started the program with female inmates because they seemed more receptive.
Arpaio says the only exercise female inmates have been getting is speed-walking around the tent yard.
He says Pedal Vision gives them a reason to get moving and a way to burn calories.
I seem to recall that MANY years ago the concept was in a book (The Ugly American?) where it was used somewhere in Africa.
I think he would make a great POTUS.
Who wants to take bets on how long it will be before reports start surfacing that JOE IS A RACIST by even suggesting this?
Well~! We can all get behind this “green initiative”.
But-but all that motion converts oxygen to evil CO2! Will they need carbon credits?
Yep, saw it on HGTV. While he touts his ‘green’ living he’s burning up mega watts of energy filming his life style for an entire show season.
Off hand I don't think it will be long.
Next big story for the MSM, right after the earthquake.
Nominated for best posting of the day!
I think you are right. It is probably just direct from generator to TV. Simpler.
If there is no battery, does that mean they can take a break during commercials - and let the picture go dark? Not that much different (except for the bars on the windows) from me using my DVR fast forward for the same purpose.
Brings back memories of the old song about “I ride my bicycle...” and “Fat bottomed girls...” Wish I could remember all the words and who wrote it.
“I rode my bicycle past your window last night” was a line in the song “Brand New Key” by Melanie (ca 1970)
Fat Bottom Girls is/was from the Queen album “Jazz” (ca 1978)
Two songs, several years apart, during the drug-hazed 1970-1980 era. No wonder you don’t remember... (VBEG).
Hey you Freeper men, these women can kick your A**!!!
My mistake. Brand New Key was a 1972 hit, not 1970.
Janice Joplin for bicycle and Queen for fat bottomed girls. Just search for the phrases and ‘lyrics.’
There was also the song “Bicycle Race” one the Queen album (Jazz) just before Fat bottom Girls. Perhaps that is the duo of ditties you were thinking of?
NOT Janis Joplin, FWIW
You gotta love Sheriff Joe.

Too funny. Actually during the late 70’s and early 80’s I was trying to keep my own kids out of the pot! Wish I could blame my memory lapses on drugs but instead think about the immense amount of stuff that has accumulated somewhere in my memory over so many years. Sometimes some things just run together and the pieces of the puzzle that pop out don’t quite fit - like trying to link the bicycle song with Fat Bottom Girls.
Thanks to you both for the gyro correction!
Right. It is DEFINITELY not Joplin. It is Melanie, and I should know better.
