Rise of Hungary's far-Right Jobbik party stirs disturbing echoes of the 1940s
UK Telegraph ^ | April 3, 2010 | Matthew Day

As Hungary prepares to vote in a crucial election, the far-Right Jobbik party expects great success - to the consternation of democrats and those old enough to remember the fascist past.

The rally in a school hall in the normally sleepy town of Dunakeszi was packed with hundreds of supporters. They cheered as Mr Vona promised to rid Hungary of corruption and crack down on foreign interests.

He spoke about stopping Roma, the country's biggest ethnic minority, from sponging off the state - forcing anyone claiming benefits to perform public service in return. He promised to "give back Hungary's national pride and identity".

With one week to go before the country goes to the polls for the first of two rounds of voting, Jobbik has reaped the benefit of the spectacular demise of Hungary's left-wing MSZP government. Accused of rampant corruption and castigated from all sides for mismanagement of the worst recession since 1989, the government faces a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Right.

“They can have the label, but they aren’t right wing, as neither were the nazis.”

No, I think you have it backwards — the Jobbik party is “right wing” and they are NOT Nazis.

“Most of the forties was spent under the hammer and sickle. But we can’t ever mention communist tyranny now, can we?
Only a complete imbecile would try to bring up some fear of fascism from that.”

You are obviously one of the few who does understand.

I can’t help you with that particular ad for Jobbik, but they have an English website, an ad on it has English subtitles:

http://www.jobbik.com/videos/3155.html

And here is more videos:

http://www.jobbik.com/videos/index.1.html

And here is another one against the current PM, who apparently is “ex-communist”, who changed stripes and brutally dispersed a demonstration against him.

http://www.jobbik.com/videos/3104.html

The Jobbik party may be a bit too far to the right, but the current government is too far to the left.

First, the BNP is fascist. Anybody courting the BNP is out in my book. Everybody’s favorite Tory MEP says so and has pointed out how socialist they are.

Second, Hungary has a perfectly good center-right party, further right than western European parties like the Tories or Sarkozy’s or Merkel’s parties — Fidesz — but the problem is that it has been run by one guy, Victor Orban, for a long time. Still, they are looking at close to a 2/3rds majority based on the epic failure of the socialists.

It should be noted that “Roma” means gypsies for anybody who doesn’t know. I don’t know the particulars but gypsy culture would lead them to be prime targets for welfare dependency.

Thanks for the additional information.

As I understand the gypsies in Hungary have a lot of criminal elements within:

Incidence of Crime
Crimes against both people and property soared during the 1980s. Violent crime, which also increased dramatically, was disproportionately committed by Gypsies (see Minority Groups , ch. 2). Gypsies made up about 4.7 percent of the population, but they numbered 54 percent of those persons convicted of murder and rape and 49 percent of those convicted of robbery.

“We cannot be fooled by the ‘labellers’.”

Exactly — the lefists in the US are labeling the tea parties Nazist.

Hollywood petitions against GOP Nazi-based Tea-Party Racism

“Los Angeles filmmaker, Robert Greenwald and his Brave New Foundation has joined the recent anti-racism actions in attempt to halt Republican supported Tea-Party extremists increasingly adopting overt, extremist racism. Neo-Nazis started the Tea-Party movement, unbeknown to many “Patriots” attending its meetings and events.”

The worst thing about the Nazis, is that they forever tainted any notion of nationalism with Nazism, so that those who defend the legitimate need for a “Nation-State”, or evoke any sort of national pride are tarred as Nazis.

Many Nazis were in fact die-hard socialists, who started out as Communists. Goebbels was probably the biggest socialist in Hitler’s inner circle. Hitler was more pragmatic and understood that if the socialists gained too much power in the Nazi movement, they would scare off the German industrialists, whom Hitler desperately needed to help rebuild the German war machine. One of the reasons for the “Night of the Long Knives”, was that the SA leadership was extremely socialist and wanted a complete government takeover of German industry and stipping the industrialists of their control. Hitler did not see it that way, and thus, had them eradicated.

Not Nazi’s just Hungarian patriots. The Hungarian Nazis were members of the Arrow Cross, who by the way were the last to surrender to the allies. They fought the Russians beyond May 8th. I think the word Roma, applies to the Gypsies, but I won’t swear to it.
