OAKDALE, Calif. (CBS/KOVR) Crowds of students and parents gathered around to watch an Oakdale High School freshman violently beat her classmate. Instead of calling 911, students whipped out their cell phones to record the attack. Manita Hazlewood, the mother of the victim, told CBS affiliate KOVR that her daughter didn't have a chance to fight back. "This girl was on top of her slamming her head into the ground," she said.
The flight lasted about 30 seconds but the girl was already badly beaten and suffered a concussion. A mother, who wants to remain anonymous, says she stepped in to help as she witnessed parents cheering on the attacker.
"I was very shocked. These are grown parents. This girl had enough time, and these people were right next to it," said the woman.
The victim's mother told KOVR, "She's traumatized. Not only was she beaten, it was on YouTube; there's video. I got three different versions of it."
In the recording, students can be heard egging on the attack.
Hazlewood's daughter was brought back to the school and interviewed by administrators and cops. Hazlewood is angry the school didn't call her even though her daughter was badly beaten.
Oakdale Joint Unified School District Superintendent Fred Rich told KOVR, "We try to ensure the safety. It's not always physically possible, especially if we don't know about it."
KOVR says the victim was suspended even though the video allegedly shows her to be the recipient of the attack. The other girl has reportedly been expelled.
Police are investigating. No word yet on what the fight caused the fight.
This is standard for high schools today. Suspend the victim. I know, this happened to one of my kids. No call from the school notifying me my son was attacked. When I found out the next day and called the school, the police officer said that if he would have reported the attack, my son would have been suspended and he knew from experience with this “mentally disturbed” attacker, that my son didn’t do anything, he didn’t even get a chance to defend himself, that my son would have been suspended. He didn’t want to do that to my son. Now that I think back, I should have done something to put the school on notice. The police officer told me that one victim had to have stitches, a lot, in his scalp after a fight not caused by the victim. The victim was attacked and both were suspended. After a few lawsuits, maybe the school would actually stop penalizing the victim.
I guess we should expect the “hate crime fighters” to parachute in at any moment now...
I too was surprised. My Mom was raised in Oakdale. I used to spend 2 weeks each summer with my grandparents there. It sure has changed.
Ok, ok, I’ll take a crack at it even though I haven’t scrolled down. Is it possible that we are talking about blacks and hispanics? Just saying.
Oakland, lol.
No way!
You got something against kids fighting?
I call it irresponsible and immature. I would not want to see someone get injured for a no good reason, and being a bully or put some video on you-tube is absolutely ridiculous.
By the time I got to high school I was mature enough to walk away from a fight. There were times I couldnt. Still, I wonder about people who are out to “prove”.
When? Here it is April in Northern CA and I’m still trying to warm up.
Whew.. Thanks for the link.

IMO the perp needs to spend some time locked up. Then she’ll learn first hand what disrespect is all about.
Oh, you mean like the teacher from when I was in 7th grade who took me and the kid who tried to pick a fight with me to a portable where the school had a make-shift boxing ring set up and told the two of us to put the gloves on?
Yeah. People get hurt and it proves nothing.
Defending yourself when you get attacked is one thing. Starting the fight is another altogether. It shows a real lack of maturity and judgment to resort to blows to settle something.
It may work well in the animal kingdom to establish dominance, but humans aren't animals that they need to behave like that.
What purpose do you see in fighting that you don't object to it?
We’ve gone beyond the generation that does not know right from wrong. Today, they see this kind of behavior as just fine and dandy. It’s societal de-evolution. The end is near.
That's the object, kick the crap out of your opponent.
The same object of war!
And no I have no objection to war.
Really? I've stopped plenty of fights in my time and and onlookers never once tried to jump me. They've just looked ashamed or embarrassed and walked away.
>>It said her father was a Pastor.<<
It said Grandfather. I get your point but I didn’t see father in the picture.
Apparently I wasn’t there to kick the crap out of you.
This has Amish fingerprints all over it.
Long Island during the 50”s.....Ha !....We used to track the bullies after school. they usually were just lackeys trying to impress some gang ‘Leader”.
When they were separated from their gang, walking alone, a group of victims
would surround them and have all kinds of fun...
Those were great memories....Show me a tough punk picking on some shy kid after school and I’ll show you a sniveling little coward every time.
Heck no, not me. And watching someone get their head slammed repeatedly into the cement by their aggressor really gives me a hard on! I just wish i could have been standing next to you and the other adults watching......We could have gotten off!
