US President Barack Obama has decided to abandon any serious effort to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He is determined instead to live with a nuclear Iran, by containment and, if possible, negotiation.
This is the shifting tectonic plate in the Middle East.
This is the giant story of the past few weeks which the world has largely missed, distracted by the theatre of the absurd of Obama's contrived and mock confrontation with Israel over 1600 apartments to be built in three years' time in a Jewish suburb in East Jerusalem.
Iran is the only semi-intelligible explanation for Obama's bizarre over-reaction against the Israelis.
In the Middle East, today, Iran is the story. It is the consideration behind all other considerations.

The biblically prophesied World War III may be on the horizon in the Middle East.
We’ll meet again,
Don’t know where, don’t know when...
About 30 years ago (or maybe a bit more) our RAT Party abandoned that attitude and adopted "oppose *any* friend and support *any* foe" in its place.
If you're curious check it out on youtube. It's really excellent,IMO.And while you're at it check out his speech at the Berlin Wall. It,too, was outstanding.
JFK is an example of what our RAT Party *used* to be.
And therein lies the *real* problem for Iran.
Tel Aviv? or Bushehr Nuclear Facility?
Unless Israel miscalculates (which,I suppose,is possible) my money's on Iran.
The empire collapses like so much sand.
Good riddance,America may return to being America again.
What we have going for us is that the Iranians are nearly as incompetent at it as the North Koreans. But sooner or later Og The Caveman will figure out how to slap two pieces of U-235 together if somebody is stupid enough to give them to him. And depending on the other guy's incompetence may be a pretty fair bet but it's disastrous foreign policy because sooner or later he can always get lucky.
The real difficulty is that the Iranians have had plenty of time (courtesy of soft power, see item 1) to spread their program such that a quick military strike isn't very dependable short of a protracted and open war. So we all wait for an Iranian finger on the button. Welcome back to the Cold War.
The real question here is whether this is a case of gross incompetence or something more sinister. Either way the likely outcome will be the deaths of millions of people.
That would be my bet too. Survival usually trumps all else.
Afterwards they're going to have to face the condemnation of the entire planet including
the communist occupation government of the USA.
I hope they have the belly for it.
