The Glory Days of NASA are Over
Big Think ^ | 4/1/10 | Michio Kaku

Posted on 04/01/2010 8:54:38 PM PDT by agooga

Many people were sent gasping when President Obama unveiled his plan for outer space with his proposal to cancel NASA‘s Constellation program. It turns out that the great recession of 2008 and 2009 has claimed yet another victim and this time it's the manned exploration of the Universe.

Back in 2004, President George W. Bush laid out an ambitious plan. The space shuttle was to be phased out this year and five years later the replacement for the space shuttle (the Ares system) would be fully functional and operational. Then by 2020, the plan was to establish a permanent man presence on the moon and after that maybe even the planet Mars.

Forget it about it - Everything is out the window!

Lets face it - The glory days of NASA are over.

Their full time job will be fudging data for global warming scientists.

Not much "glory" in watching cow farts floating through the atmosphere when you're not tied up watching the glaciers "melt".

Barry sure does know how to bring America down to size. Barry's new motto, "America! We're No. 2!"

Let's face it, the glory days of the USA are over thanks to Obama and his band of anti-capitalist socialist advisors and cronies!

His dad laid out the plan in 1989. W simply regurgitated it.

Of course NASA is getting thrown under the bus. obama needs those funds to prop up his socialist programs.

I expect Obama to keep track of us from outer space. NASA has yet to be informed of their new mission (besides that global warming thing). The IRS won't be able to see detect all folks that don't buy health insurance. However, the eye in the sky will flush us out.

Wait! Remember that Obama told NASA to help the Muslims. Do you suppose we could send them to the moon?

I thought they pretty much were over in 1972 when the last manned mission left the moon.

Orbital space is the military high ground. Withdrawal equals an immediate surrender to whatever comes from others in the future. Once curtailed, the US cannot ever recover the initiatives and momentum it has lost. It is also true that a nation without a valid currency cannot defend itself. The banking system fraud has been and is a national security issue.

By 2020 we may not have the money to keep a permanent base open anywhere, much less on the moon.

My dad worked with some of the best at NASA - Von Braun, Chris Kraft, Gene Kranz, even John Glenn (from test pilot days).

Thankfully he didn't live to see the absolute mediocrity (at best) and bureaucratic mentality that pervades that group now. Pathetic.

NASA is now just like any other indolent government department.

I would put the end of it’s “glory days” a lot further back than now. There was a time that it was the technology driver for the US, and effectively, the world.

“In fact, over 4,500 people may lose their jobs outright when the space shuttle is phased out “

I believe that O’Bummer’s defunding of the space program is supposed to have saved something like 3 billion dollars. Divide this by the 4500 jobs lost by NASA and we have a little over $600,000 saved per job lost. That’s a lot of savings, but I don’t think that is too much more than the amount money he spent for each tatoo removal or STD counseling job he “created or saved” with his stimulus spending. Moreover, one must consider that this blow to the space program is yet another contribution to the relentless loss of technical skills we have sustained in recent decades.
