Charity's Christians-Only Hiring Policy Draws Fire

Charity's Christians-Only Hiring Policy Draws Fire World Relief's rule is legal, but it has caused complaints and resignations by staffers who say it's discrimination.

Reporting from Chicago - A prominent refugee resettlement organization has enacted a policy that requires new employees to be Christian, triggering staff complaints and departures by those who see it as discrimination.

World Relief, a global evangelical Christian charity that receives federal funds to resettle refugees, said the policy simply establishes a routine that has been in place for years.

"We felt we needed to put a formal policy in place that reflects a 65-year history of hiring according to our faith," said Stephan Bauman, senior vice president of programs for the Baltimore-based agency. "The policy is really just to galvanize our organization."

But staffers don't necessarily see it that way.

"As a Christian, I feel it is my duty to advocate for the most vulnerable," said former legal aide Trisha Teofilo, who left because of the policy. "I believe Jesus would not promote a policy of discrimination."

Under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the policy is legal. But opponents, including current and former employees, say it is hypocritical for an agency to discriminate when its mission is settling refugees -- many of whom have fled religious intolerance in their home countries.

. “I believe Jesus would not promote a policy of discrimination.”

She’s right, everyone has the chance to become a Christian.

Its a Christian charity, so they hire Christians. They do not discriminate when it comes to helping refugees. Since most of these refugees are being attacked by non-Christians, and particularly muslims, it makes sense not to hire from the religions that are perpetrating the attacks.

When will Saudi start allowing Christian Bibles into their country let alone allowing a Christian Church?

We don’t hire Pagans, Satanists, Muslims, or Cargo Cultists to work at my synagogue. We do hire Christians from time to time but we are free not to. Everyone else should have the same freedom in the religious environment itself.

While I think world Relief has every right to hire only Christians, the organization as a whole can go pound sand as far as I'm concerned.

Back in '95, when my battalion was babysitting Cuban and Haitian refugees as part of Operation Sea Signal at Gitmo, World Relief was set up right inside our camp. Whenever we got on any refugee(s) for the disgustingly filthy condition of their hooch(es), they went running off to World Relief, so the little do-gooders could come tell us to back off an let them continue living in squalor. To which we usually told them to go pound sand.

The do-gooders also made sure to brief every refugee on exactly what government welfare programs they were eligible for, and how to apply for them once they were stateside. And of course, we weren't allowed to require the refugees to attend English language classes at night...World Relief made sure everyone understood that.

Sorry, World Relief, y'all done blew it with me. You won't get any of my sympathy, even if you're in the right.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

Cargo Cultists

Thanks for the education. I thought you made it up, so googled it. Makes sense.

I get really tired of people whining about not being included.

Of course the Hamas 'charities' would hire anyone. NOT.

many of whom have fled religious intolerance in their home countries.

I'll bet there's a certain common thread in all that religious intolerance.

Here you go Trisha; we’re doing bacon and eggs for 1000 this morning...

Christ didn’t discriminate much in His ministry; sinners of all types he supped with but He didn’t have much tolerance for Sadducees and Pharisees.

This is as ridiculous as those muslims who were trying to take away the phrase ‘in the name of the Lord” from TRINITY COLLEGE.

Now when these Muzzies enrolled, they didn’t think that TRINITY stood for that character in the Matrix, did they?

Legal? Legal to hire Christians only?

Legal now, maybe. But wait til the new health care rules and pro-homosexual discrimination rules extend their tentacles into every corner of society.

She’s right, everyone has the chance to become a Christian.

Mr Ali could become a Christian if he wanted to work for them bad enough.
