TV Station Exec On Oprah: “There are people who are deeply thankful she is calling it quits”
TV By the Numbers ^ | 03/29/10 | Bill Gorman

According to a report today in Broadcasting & Cable, the most likely replacement for The Oprah Winfrey Show when it goes off syndication in fall 2011 is something that will save local stations (or groups) money.

“Oprah’s ratings have eroded so much that the image of Oprah is much stronger than the reality of Oprah, either as a news lead-in or as a money-maker,” says one station executive. “In many cases, Oprah is a stunning loss leader. There are people who are deeply thankful she is calling it quits.”

The report includes a number of alternatives being discussed including more local newscasts, but concludes that the options to replace Oprah will be “unlikely to get Oprah-sized ratings but are far cheaper”. The idea that Rosie O’Donnell or others might “replace” Oprah is dismissed.

Interesting. I knew Oprah's numbers had gone in the crapper, especially since she endorsed Obama, but I didn't realize about the cost to the local stations. I saw at one point last fall, she was getting beat by Maury Povich.

Sounds like her support of the One has helped her fall.

She supported someone who should not be president because he isn’t a citizen.

People eventually get tired of the phonies and the hypocrisy.

I think a lot of Oprah’s audience were white women interested mostly in self-improvement sorts of things. When it became apparent that Obama was affiliated with a racist, white-hating “preacher,” that could have killed off a lot of her following.

It happened for me much earlier than that, though. She was pretty much a female version of Geraldo, in it for the shock value more than anything else. I’m just not into that kind of teevee. But what really did it was her slander of the cattle industry, based on “studies” that were every bit as good as the kinds of studies that Al Bore touts.

I was done with her the day she said “Jesus can’t be the only way to heaven’...

My Bible says ‘no man comes to the Father but by me’...

I’d like to know why the Hallmark channel seems to have turned into the Martha Stewart channel all day?

I stopped watching her nearly 15 years ago. I won’t watch her replacement. She is her own biggest fan and the women on her show are Stepford women.

“In many cases, Oprah is a stunning loss leader”.

...my wife was a buyer in retail and said that a “loss leader” is when a drug store advertises a can of “Pringles” 2 for .59. They take the loss on the Pringles in hopes you’ll buy other things like Advil for $8.99.

It’s funny to think that Oprah is the money losing can of Pringles. Very funny!

Never a good idea to alienate 50% of your audience.

She’s worth over $3 billion. Isn’t there some way we can get her to pay for healthcare?

"I’d like to know why the Hallmark channel seems to have turned into the Martha Stewart channel all day?"

I caught a blurb the last day or two that said something about Hallmark and Stewart creating a "Martha Stewart Network" together - something that would compete with Oprah's own network.

When I was a kid in the 1970s, we had the “Four O’Clock Movie” every day. Sometimes, they’d pick a theme and go with “Apes (Planet of) Week” or “Godzirra Week”.

That was around the time the news started coming on at 4:30pm and took over the time slot.
