U.S. Navy Captures 5 Pirates After Gun Battle in Indian Ocean

Suspected Somali pirates fired on a U.S. Navy warship off East Africa early Thursday in what appeared to be a ransom-seeking attack on an American guided missile frigate, officials said.

The USS Nicholas returned fire on the pirate skiff, sinking it and confiscating a nearby mothership. The Navy took five pirates into custody, said Navy Lt. Patrick Foughty, a spokesman.

International naval forces have stepped up their enforcement of the waters off East Africa in an effort to thwart a growing pirate trade.

Thursday's attack came just shy of a year since pirates attacked the U.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama and took American Richard Phillips hostage. Phillips was rescued five days later when Navy SEAL snipers shot three pirates in a lifeboat.

The U.S. Africa Command said the five pirates seized Thursday would remain in U.S. custody on board the frigate for now. The Nicholas is home-ported in Norfolk, Va.

Bold, stupid or crazy?

How can these pirates expect to successfully attack a modern warship?

Great, catch them in the Indian Ocean, bring them onto a US Navy vessel, mirandize them, fly them to NYC to try them, realize we don’t have anyone to translate into the particular Somali dialect they speak so they can’t get a fair trial, release them onto the streets with completed paperwork for public assistance, medicaid, government housing, etc. That would only make it fair since the Somali’s can’t just cross the border like our Mexican neighbors, so we might as well fly them over here.

For once I want Obama to talk like Putin, “we will blow these pirates to the bottom of the ocean, blow up their mother ships, turn them into shark bait, and allow their boats to become the start of a new coral reef. We will continue to hunt them and shoot them until they stop being pirates or we have killed them all.”

They aren't stupid. The attack fails, they surrender and get a free ticket to the USA.

Wow.

Now that is major league stupid. We're not talking amateurs of stupid here, but full-blown, professional quality, expert level stupidity.

Not necessarily. Obama has been trying to promote the so called government of Somalia.

He may turn them over to this provisional government.

“Captures”?

Don’t our ships have a yard arm (for hanging) or a plank (for walking)? Given the red carpet treatment our CIC wants our enemies to receive, our guys need to adopt a ‘no prisoner’ policy.

Why? The are eminently qualified to work for the White-house.

Not to worry. Obama will appoint White House attorneys to represent his Muslim brethren.

That happened in a Yemini port where the ship was not permitted to defend itself.

Attack at sea is a whole different set of rules.

If an unidentified craft approaches at sea the captain is expected to warn off, if the warning is ignored he is expected to engage the target.

I don’t think so!

Pirates are more on the FREE MARKET CAPITALIST end of the economic spectrum for Obama.

I bet there is not a social welfare recipient in the bunch.

They watched Under Seige and then saw a recent photo of Seagal?

Our commander in chief King Obama, the O wise one, will bring these pirates to the US for a civil trial and free them. Then he will give them citizenship as a compensation for their trouble and permanent unemployment for life. Dumb dodo birds attacked a US Warship? Holy crap, maybe disability would be more in line.
