A recent Rutgers University graduate who was expected to start law school in the fall is clinging to life after he was beaten into a coma while vacationing in Cancun, Mexico.

Joseph "Zeke" Rucker and a friend went to the popular vacation spot two weeks ago to celebrate his graduation, but hours after they arrived the 21-year-old was found severely beaten about 40 feet away from the hotel's pool, CBS3.com reported.

"He has two huge skull fractures in the back of his head and he has internal bleeding in his brain and hematoma," Rucker's father Joseph told the Philadelphia station.

We have been to Mexico many times. Never felt unsafe.

Same about the Philippines. I have been there many times and never felt unsafe. There are, however, places I would not go to, day or night.

We love Mexico and the Mexican people are, for the most part, lovely and good people. We have decided that we will not be traveling there until they get a handle on the drug cartel problem. Sadly, we do not think this is something that is going to happen in the near future (within five years). We must all pray for Mexico; if she becomes a narco state, we are going to have big problems - particularly California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

This should really be in past tense.

While there may be violence in Atlanta,Detroit and Chicago they are not on my list when I plan a vacation. Mexico isn’t either.

I was stationed in Mexico City 1991-1993. We found the Mexicans to be good neighbors, hard-working and generally pro-American - but that was in Mexico City. There are places I wouldn’t think about going; I speak Spanish and (at least back in the day) was quite capable of handling myself. Border towns? Forget about it! I’ve been to Cozumel a couple of times since then on cruise ships, and the port areas are OK, but don’t go too far off the beaten path.

I agree. I’ve been to Cabo and Mazatlan and wandered all over at all hours, and didn’t even get stink eye from the locals. Speaking okay Spanish helps too.

OTOH, I could tell some stories about amazing help given gratis without question when my son got stuck up on some cliffs while going off the trail on the way up to the lighthouse at Mazatlan. People helped without any thought about us being gringo tourists or expecting a damn thing in return.

Is Mexico dangerous along the border? No doubt. But would I stay away from Cabo, Mazatlan, Cancun etc? Nope. I’d go tomorrow, with my family.

In the past couple of years I’ve been to Cabo and Mazatlan, and felt totally safe. I also went across the border to Nuevo Laredo to the Cadillac Bar with friends who know both sides for all their lives. That was risky, a little.

But the big tourist towns 100s of miles from the border? Come on.

You could get killed in NYC or LA, does that mean that every inch of America is unsafe?

Fractures to the back of his head might be consistent with slipping on the edge of the pool.

It is highly unlikely he would have two fractures and the other injuries by simply slipping and hitting the back of his head. "He has two huge skull fractures in the back of his head and he has internal bleeding in his brain and hematoma," Rucker's father Joseph told the Philadelphia station.

Nothing is impossible but I doubt this was caused by slipping on the pool deck.

Missing info: blood alcohol? did he have his wallet? drugs?

Apparently the guy was plastered out of his head and decided to sleep outside alone. Who in their right mind would do this with a nice cushy room upstairs?

Could have slipped even several times. Could have been assaulted. Could have smarted off drunk to the wrong people unable to defend himself, Shut the Hell up over there dammit!

Could have been all of these things.

He should have just gone upstairs and everything would have been fine.

His buddy should not have left him there drunk, sleeping outside, after midnight.

But hey, that’s just my two cents.

Heck, 20 years ago when I went down to Padre for Spring Break some Mexican drug dealers in Matamoros kidnapped and sacrificed an American spring break student to the devil for good luck. This is nothing.

I agree. One could also be killed in an avalanche, earthquake, and so on. The fact is that there is an enormous problem in Mexico right now - major drug wars between cartels. I have been watching this for awhile. If you don’t think it’s spreading, I don’t know what I can tell you to convince you that your feelings of security were probably misplaced. When the state dept. even issues a warning, you know it’s bad. Meanwhile, I guarantee you that there is a lot of stuff that we aren’t hearing about - as is always the case. Just because you “felt totally safe” means nothing. The police are corrupt and the good ones are scared. It makes me sad because I do love it there.

Mexico City is one of the worst places ever for kidnappings. The cartels have gained too much power.

But hey let’s indict an entire country and people for something that rarely happens in Cancun but happens daily in Atlanta Chicago NY LA etc.

The assailant (if there was one) could've just as easily been a fellow drunken college student as a Mexican local.

Thousands of their own people have died, better to be safe than sorry.

What you is true. Many years ago I can attest that it was a great place to have fun but sadly,it has gotten chaotic.

Just reality.
