John Yoo, the infamous torture memos author and Cal prof who is dogged by protests, bad-mouthed Berkeley in a recent interview with the LA Times. And one blogger for the Daily Californian, the university's newspaper, is not amused.

"Add trash-talking our city to the reasons Berkeley residents don't like Boalt Hall School of Law professor John Yoo."
The former Bush Administration lawyer and current Berkeley resident told reporter Carol J. Williams:
"I think of myself as being West Berlin during the Cold War, a shining beacon of capitalism and democracy surrounded by a sea of Marxism."

"I think of myself as being West Berlin during the Cold War, a shining beacon of capitalism and democracy surrounded by a sea of Marxism." The people of Berkeley were offended by being called Marxists? There's more hope for them than I thought.

That's not bashing that's just stating the obvious. I would think that the Berklyites would take that as a compliment.

As one who visited Berlin during the Cold War, I totally understand how John Yoo feels there at Berkeley.
What a h*llhole! Been that way since mid sixties!

"The people of Berkeley were offended by being called Marxists?"Probably too general a term. They may prefer "Stalinist" , "Maoist", "Anarchist", or "Dead-Head" (The latter, for middle-aged faculty members, may well be the most descriptive on several levels.....)

Berkeley around Christmas time; no lights, no cheer, not a thing. The only red and gold you’ll see is on the flags.
