Republican Senate candidates Tom Campbell and Chuck DeVore will debate at Brandman University in Irvine tonight, but candidate Carly Fiorina will be absent.
We felt the proposed moderator would not be fair and impartial so we declined, said Fiorinas spokeswoman, Amy Thoma. Initially, Fiorina said she could not participate because of a scheduling conflict, according to Thoma.
Moderator Mike Moodian, a Brandman University assistant professor of social science, said he offered to let Fiorina set a date when she could make it, but then the former Hewlett-Packard chief executive officer said the debate was too close to a League of Women Voters forum May 6.
Thoma accused Moodian of bullying Fiorina by including reporters on reply e-mails regarding the debate negotiations. Moodian acknowledged he copied 40 reporters on his memo to Fiorinas chief of staff but said he thinks Fiorina is ducking the debate.
Frankly, I dont think the public will buy that excuse, Moodian said. The questions are coming from the audience
The invitation is still open to them even if it means they dont want me as a moderator. Ill step down this moment.

Campbell is a smart guy, but he's no conservative.
Remember Bill Simon beating the pants off Dick Riordan after coming from 14 points behind?
Ms. Carly needs to be kept from the November ballot. She will sell us out like she did to HP.
I do and it may happen again. I will vote / donate $ to Devore ... and pray. I believe he could beat Boxer this year. He may have a hard time in 6 years and would be a big target.
#1 Devore
#2 Campbell
#300 Fiorina
After listening to a radio debate with the three of them together... I WILL vote for DaVore. The other two have a lot of excess baggage and I’m sick of RINOS.
Excellent.
