If you visit, you will undoubtedly encounter numerous Border Patrol checkpoints. They are there to impede traffic. Only the very stupid are ever caught at their checkpoints, and it usually results from some sniffer-dog picking up the scent of marijuana. As for John McCain, his only trips to the border usually occur around Yuma where he can hit the local Officer’s Club and throw down a few. I have never once heard that he visited the Sasabe checkpoint, and if he has visited Organ Pipe area it sure is kept under wraps. The route past Organ Pipe, through Ajo to Highway 8 is called the Illegal Immigrants Superhighway.
My main worry (and it probably *won’t* prevent us from actually going) is , we are both rock hounds. We want to go to the places that allow people to dig for rocks and minerals (ONLY those that allow such diggings, of course.)-so by definition we will be off the beaten trail and into the more remote, more sparsely traveled areas. But we both have our CCW, and if the laws in AZ allow for reciprocity, well...that will relieve the bulk of our concern.
