This Sam Jones you quote is indeed an obscure icon - I can find nothing about him in my library, and precious little online.

(To tell you the truth, the only Sam Jones I'm familiar with is the great Celtics guard from the 60s!)

Boswell credits Johnson with “Hell is paved with good intentions”, and was deemed a proverb by the learned in the 17th century. It has antecedents as far back as the 12th century by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, who is credited with, “Hell is full of good intentions and desires”.

But it's entirely possible the good evangelist Jones was the one who put us “on the road”!

So, as far as I'm concerned, this is your point!

I only know of Sam Jones since we now live in the town that was his home base. There are a number of bios written about him. The one I just read was by Ray Hughes...
