Congressman Chris Carney made his first public appearance in our area since voting for health care reform last week.
The Democrat from the 10th Congressional District was in Prompton Monday afternoon. He handed firefighters a check for nearly $50,000; grant money that will pay for new uniforms, radios and pagers.
While he was there, Carney defended his vote for President Obama's health care reform. "It was not that hard given the fact that a majority of people who called in from our district wanted some kind of reform," said Carney.
Carney and other Democrats recently made headlines after they voted in favor of President Obama's health care bill. The final vote was 219 for to 212 against.
On Sarah Palin's Facebook page, crosshairs mark the districts of 17 Democratic members of Congress, including Carney, that she wants to see defeated in November.
"If this is what Ms. Palin is about, if she is saying we have to reload and put crosshairs on people that's beyond the pale," said Carney. "I'm happy she's doing that, actually. It helps us. "
Carney believes the health care bill will become more popular once people understand it. He said he isn't worried about Palin's plan. "If she wants to take us on based on a popular bill, please, please let her do it," the congressman said.
Meanwhile some voters are mixed on whether Palin's criticism and Carney's health care vote will hurt his chances at reelection.
"We are still going to support Carney," said Bill Santee of Damascus Township. "I'm sure there will be a lot of Democrats that are going to suffer from this in the long run."
"I will be an advocate for Republicans and I would not vote for Chris Carney," said Jane Kopa of Waymart. "I think a lot of Americans are concerned about the amount of spending that our federal government is doing."
"You can't vote worried about your career, you have to vote the right way," said Carney. "You have to vote your conscience and for me this was a vote of conscience."
Carney said several days before the health care reform vote he got a call from President Obama. The two talked for about a half hour about the importance of the health care reform bill.

Hope his conscience wants to go fishing....Cause that’s where he’s headed...
I’m sure he can get a job in Dimock drilling for natural gas....
LOL...
He is running scared, the sick little punk!
I hope Marino wipes up the floor with him.
The One has assured the Dems that once the sheeple find out what is in their boondoggle of a bill, they will love it. First out of the box, they find out no preexisting condition coverage for kids is written is the bill they DID NOT READ. Buffoons, one and all. Send them home to go to school to learn to READ THE BILLS.
His check is a symbol of what most of this new Obama spending has been: worthless as real investment. Paving patch jobs, FD uniforms, state bureaucrats, bike paths, school outlays of all kinds ... all consumptive but nothing that will make this country to be able to compete better with China. A complete waste done with borrowed money.
What if they gave pork and nobody came?
Isn’t he one of those that refused to read th bill and supported the refuseal to have the bill read in the House,,a Peelosite?
Not sure about that, but he was one of the “Blue Dogs” who was “undecided” until the end. Of course, he voted yes...
