Pearl Jam plants trees to offset emissions

Pearl Jam's band members are working to be better men.

The rock group is partnering with Cascade Land Conservancy -- which works to preserve forests, parks and other natural areas -- to plant approximately 33 acres of native trees and plants around the Puget Sound. It's all in an effort to offset carbon emissions from the band's 2009 world tour. The group generated an estimated 5,474 metric tons of carbon during that 32-date run of concerts.

Pearl Jam is donating $210,000 to fund the plantings, which are expected mitigate more than 7,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide. The greenhouse gas contributes to climate change. To see where the trees will be planted, click here.

The band, which will perform in Boston in May, also plans to offset whatever emissions its current tour generates.

"We are constantly moving, using carbon-dependent forms of transportation and a great deal of energy," said Stone Gossard, Pearl Jam's guitarist and founder. "Since 2003, we have elected to mitigate our carbon output by tracking and calculating our emissions and contributing money to projects that strategically work to improve the environment. We view this as a cost of doing business."

Oh well, at least they aren’t buying carbon credits. At least they will have trees and their benefits to show for their efforts.

Lessee now. Take one tree seedling, move it from the nursery, and re-plant it to assuage feelings of eco-guilt.

Net gain of trees: zero.

But you have saved the Earth.

Bravo.

I'd like to demand a ransom from Pearl Jam. They either pay me $210,000, or I'm taking my chainsaw to some trees.

Pearl Jam should plant some trees to help replace the guitars that Mike McCready smashes.

Why don't they simply plant themselves - permanently - and spare us and the rest of the world their asinine pomposity - that alone would cut more so-called "carbon emissions" than planting however many trees. Speaking of which, have they gone and calculated how much carbon is emitted by the whole process of raising the seedlings, shipping them out to wherever they're to be planted, then bringing in the work crews and doing the actual planting? I would imagine that it you totted it all up, this pointless little activity of theirs would actually be a net increase in carbon emissions, not a net decrease.

Maybe they could make a start by not giving off so much hot air! What a bunch of pretentious puffs.
