SNIPPET: “Two female suicide bombers detonated their vests during morning rush hour at metro stations in Moscow, killing 37 people and wounding 65 more. The attack was carried out by the Caucasus Emirate’s ‘Black Widows,’ and was foreshadowed by the leader of the terror group in a statement in February.

The first suicide bomber detonated at the Lubyanka metro station at 7:52 a.m. local time, killing 24 people, according to RIA Novosti. The Lubyanka station is near the headquarters of the Federal Security Service (FSB), the successor of the notorious KGB.

The second blast took place about 40 minutes later, at the Park Kultury station, which is near the Kremlin, killing 13 people.

The FSB said that an estimated four kilograms of explosives was used in the first suicide attack and 1.5 kilograms was used in the second.

“At present the overall number of the dead as a result of the explosions at the Park Kultury and Lubyanka metro stations is 37, and another 65 were wounded,” Irina Adrianova, the spokeswomen for the Ministry for Emergency Situations told ITAR-TASS.”

SNIPPET: “Russian security services were hunting for more “Black Widows” yesterday amid fears that the women who blew themselves up in the Moscow Metro were part of a 30-strong suicide squad trained by a Chechen terrorist leader.

Agents from the Federal Security Service (FSB) believe that the women were avenging the death of Said Buryatsky, the leading ideologue of the Islamist rebels in the North Caucasus, who was killed this month in Ingushetia.”

SNIPPET: “Buryatsky, a Muslim convert who was born Alexander Tikhomirov, was among six militants killed in an FSB operation in Ingushetia on March 2. The Kremlin described him then as the mastermind behind a bomb attack on the Nevsky Express train between Moscow and St Petersburg that killed 26 and wounded 100 in November.

He was also blamed for the suicide bombing that almost succeeded in assassinating Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, Ingushetia’s President, last June and the attack in August that devastated the main police station in Nazran, the Ingush capital, killing 20 officers.”

SNIPPET: “It was suggested today that some 21 more ‘widows’ are at large following reports that the women were part of a 30-strong band of suicide bombers trained at a Muslim school in Turkey. Nine have already perished in earlier attacks, Russian media said.

The dead women in Monday’s attack are both believed to be aged between 18 and 25 and to have carried the explosives - packed with nails and metal fragments to maximise death and destruction - in shahid belts or handbags.
According to police who have viewed CCTV which has not yet been released, one was said to be mentally retarded.

A source close to the investigators said that the women suicide bombers travelled to Moscow early on Monday by coach from a unnamed Caucasus town, prompting the belief that the attack was by militants from volatile Chechnya.

The women were accompanied by a tall man with Caucasus appearance, dressed in dark blue coat with white marks. He had five days growth of beard. Both women were identified by the driver of the coach.

‘One was dressed in black trousers, another in black skirt, black tights and spangled black shoes,’ said the Kommersant newspaper. Their appearance indicated they were from the Caucasus region.

The newspaper said the women had been taught by an Islamic militant who had himself being killed last month in an operation by the FSB, which replaced the KGB. ‘Around 30 of them were taught in Madrasah (Muslim school) in Turkey and then came back to perform their tasks,’ said Kommersant.”

A computer science teacher was identified by her parents as the second of two female suicide bombers who killed dozens during a rush-hour attack on the Moscow metro last week, a Russian newspaper reported Sunday.

Rasul Magomedov recognized his daughter Maryam Sharilova in a photograph published on the Internet and sent to him by an acquaintance. The 28-year-old disappeared the day before the March 29 bombings that killed 40 and wounded at least 121.

Sharilova was from the turbulent southern province of Dagestan, also home to the woman identified as the first bomber. On Friday, Russian prosecutors named Dzhennet Abdurakhmanova, the 17-year-old widow of an Islamist militant, as the young woman who blew herself up at the Park Kultury metro station.

Magomedov said his daughter had a degree in mathematics and psychology and had been living at home and teaching computer science since 2006. He said he had never noticed her express extremist views.”

While attention has obviously focused on the attacks themselves and on the video claim of responsibility by the leader of the Islamic Emirate of the Caucasus, Dokku ‘Umarov, I have not seen any references to a written statement by the same man posted on the online jihadi library Minbar al-Tawhid wa-l-Jihad (the Pulpit of the Unity of God and Jihad).

This statement – and particularly the fact that it was posted on the Minbar, the largest jihadi online library – is interesting. It indicates a development of potentially great significance to the future of jihadi ideological production. This post is the first in a short series of posts I intend to write on this subject for Jihadica. For instance, the Jordanian owner of the website, Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi, has written an epistle in support of the mujahidin in the Caucasus. In it, al-Maqdisi praises the supposed ideological purity, leadership and righteousness of the fighters in the Caucasus and writes that this group can serve as an example for other jihadi groups in the Muslim world. SNIPPET: “In the previous two parts of this short series (here and here), we saw that the Jordanian radical ideologue Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi and his website, Minbar al-Tawhid wa-l-Jihad, have been closely involved in efforts to support the mujahidun in the Caucasus by offering advice, translating books into Russian and encouraging and praising their efforts.

We still don’t know why this is the case, however. In this final part of the series, we will try to answer that question.”

SNIPPET: “So what is the Minbar doing in Moscow then?

The Minbar’s communique about the subway bombings in Moscow earlier this year, its interest in the Caucasus and its efforts to translate certain books into Russian should probably be seen as part of this wider plan by al-Maqdisi and certain like-minded scholars to support and encourage mujahidun who try to wage a “clean” jihad and to advise others on how to do that. In fact, if one were to take a look at the communique with which this series started as well as al-Maqdisi’s epistle about the Islamic Emirate in the Caucasus, it is striking that so much of these texts is spent praising the mujahidun for their eagerness to obtain knowledge, their supposed purity of arms, the situation in which they allegedly had no other choice than to use violence, their correct choice of victims etc., while hardly any attention is paid to their military prowess. The praise, in other words, seems to be caused not by the mujahidun’s firepower but by their careful and considered use of violence and appears to be directed not just at the mujahidun in the Caucasus but also at other aspiring jihadis as if to tell them: “Take a good look guys, this is how you wage a proper jihad.””

Russians kill top Caucasus Emirate leader

SNIPPET: “Russian security forces have killed a senior leader in the al Qaeda-linked Islamic Caucasus Emirate during a raid yesterday in the Republic of Dagestan.

Amir Sayfullah (or Sword of Allah) was killed during a raid in the village of Gubin in Dagestan, according to a report at Kavkaz Center, the propaganda arm of the Islamic Caucasus Emirate. Sayfullah was killed along with four other fighters after Russian security forces surrounded a safe house in the village.

Russian officials identified one of those killed during the raid in Gunib as Magomedali Vagabov, the terrorist commander who sent two female suicide bombers, including his wife, Mariam Sharipova, to carry out attacks in the Moscow Metro on March 29. The double suicide attack killed 39 people. Vagabov is in fact Sayfullah.

Sayfullah held two top leadership positions in the Caucasus Emirate. He was the top judicial figure for the terror group and also served as the emir of forces in Dagestan, one of the most active theaters in the Caucasus.”
