Good works are always a fruit of faith. There’s nothing wrong with a church wanting to do good works because its people believe in (on) Jesus for personal salvation. To let the good works elbow aside the gospel message of salvation by faith, or to become perversions themselves, is an abomination.
You are right, of course. The problem, of course, occurs when the clergy make good works the end all and be all of their mission. Preach the gospel. God will supply the needs.
