The Statue stands not for liberty in the abstract, but for its American realization in the will of the people.

The Statue of Liberty can certainly be interpreted as a metaphor for American popular sovereignty, but I’ve always thought of it as something more universal. I think it a personification of the spirit of freedom, which although often shackled and abused stands as a beacon of light to a world too often shrouded in darkness. Obama and his ilk can never extinguish her lamp as long as one man remains alive to keep the flame lit.
