Officials worry anger at D.C. is behind low Texas census response
Houston Chronicle ^ | 3-27-2010 | RICHARD S. DUNHAM - MEREDITH SIMONS

Posted on 03/27/2010 8:10:53 AM PDT by deport

WASHINGTON — Texas is counting on the 2010 Census to deliver four new congressional districts, four new Electoral College votes in presidential elections, and millions of dollars in additional federal aid. But, as some elected officials are starting to worry, Uncle Sam can't deliver anything to the rapidly growing Sun Belt state unless Texas residents deliver their forms back to the government.

As of Friday afternoon, only 27 percent of Texas households had filled in and returned their census forms — well below the national average of 34 percent — according to computer data from the U.S. Census Bureau. In Harris County, the response rate is 23 percent. Houston's returns are running at 21 percent. ........

Polling by the Pew Research Center finds Democrats are more likely than other Americans to view the census as “very important” to the country. Seventy-six percent of Democrats call this year's count very important, compared with 61 percent of Republicans and independents.

In Texas, some of the counties with the lowest census return rates are among the state's most Republican, including Briscoe County in the Panhandle, 8 percent; King County, near Lubbock, 5 percent; Culberson County, near El Paso, 11 percent; and Newton County, in deep East Texas, 18 percent. Most other counties near the bottom of the list are heavily Hispanic counties along the Texas-Mexico border. .....

“People are concerned about the apparent intrusive nature of the census,” said Rep. Ted Poe, R-Humble. “People are very concerned that the government is going too far.” ........

But Texas can only get those seats, and the congressional clout that comes with it, if Texans stand up to be counted. Any conservative revolt would only reduce the representation in conservative areas of the state, .........

Ignore them. I don’t answer the door if I look out and see someone I don’t know. After a while they stop showing up.

The Census will just send Chicago THUGS to your house if you don’t send back the form.

Well, just my 2 cents worth:

The f'n goobermint now lies to the public repeatedly w/ great frequency w/ increases in both magnitude and scope.

Therefore, whatever numbers they do get to guess with, those in goobermint will slant, color, stretch, hide, skew, ignore, and outright lie to pass ever more socialist, liberty bleeding, freedom killing, higher taxation legislation.

So, for the logically minded, What's the Point of Wasting the Time to fill out a census form?

Sure "we" don't fill out our race.... but all of the protected class will. So, they'll determine the angry white people didn't answer the question "properly" these districts will have money taken from them and re-distributed to the ones so eager to say I'm xxxx-American.

My race? = NASCAR.

Phone number. "I plead the 5th Amendment; You assume I have a phone."

Where's this money going to come from? Since Texas is pretty much the only large state that is coming through the Obama Recession in the best condition. These millions are going to come from taxes paid by Texans. So, by not participating in the Census, it'll cut down on the amount of money spent by the Feds, thus reducing the amount of taxes taken from Texans.

Where am I going wrong here?

My 8 year old daughter brought home from school a 4 page, 4 color glossy brochure in English and Spanish nagging me to do the census. I threw it out. I wish I would have saved it so I could post it to FR.

Have to agree with "Other" in that why the F' does race matter in counting the total number of people living in one area, the entire couontry???

Seems to me, the goobermint is racists when refusing to be colorblind. They will only get the number living at the address from me.

The friggin' goobermint has all the info on me now.....

Oops, I'm sorry Mr. Census Gubmint Man, dat's right, dares laws that say the SS Administration and the IRS just cannot hand over private data to Gubmint agencies that aren't liable for securing such data.

If you don’t send in the head count you are slitting your own throat. Undercount enough and you lose Congressional representation.

Me too, I can’t really be sure until then. Who knows who may drop in and hang?

And for another thing, I’ve become so desensitized to race that I just can’t tell one from another. It is all so confusing to me.

Exactly. I figured if I don’t fill the entire thing out I’m saving someone’s job:)

I only put the number of people and our names. That’s it.

They will do what they want with the numbers regardless. This is what happens when you declare war on the people. They stop being so cooperative with you.

The money is fed allocated money coming from all of us who pay into the system. The 4 congress critters are just a realignment among the states of the 435 representatives.

... and millions of dollars in additional federal aid.

State governments are as bad as individual welfare recipients, when it comes to grubbing for public money. Why should money go from Texas to the US Treasury then turn around and be delivered back to Texas (or any state)? Because there is a chance of getting money that originated in Florida, or Idaho, that's why.

The key to controlling the monster is shutting of the oxygen--money.

Champ Village, MO No. 1 at 80%.

2000 Census

4 households, 1 homeowner, 3 rentals
12 residents

I guess the grew by 20% to 5 households.

I’m really pissed off at my husband. He gets home earlier than I do and gets the mail, so he got the census form and filled out nearly ALL the questions except for our phone number and do we own/rent.

I wanted him to put down just the # of people and tell them to f-— off on the rest of them.

Grrrr.

Conservative states must get the highest responses. Basic info, how many in house.

The concern is will the Obama and Rhamm Gestapo honestly count the count?
