The 14th Amendment solved Lincoln's problem of conferring 'citizenship' on the slaves after they were freed. Knowing he couldn't force the state's to grant them citizenship, he gave them an opportunity to become federal citizens, with all the rights and priviledges and protections that natural born citizens had.
Now that the states for the most part have given up their sovereignty to the federal government, granting 30 million illegal aliens federal citizenship via the 14th Amendment will just become a matter of a stroke of the pen, the protections and guarantees already in place by virtue of the 14th Amendment. Simple, eh?
