On David Frum’s Departure from AEI
National Review ^ | March 26, 2010 | Charles Murray

Posted on 03/26/2010 1:13:06 PM PDT by rightwingintelligentsia

With Mike Allen’s account of his exchange with David Frum, we apparently have David’s version of his departure from AEI: Donor pressure forced AEI president Arthur Brooks to fire him. “But the elite isn’t leading anymore,” David is quoted as saying. “It’s trapped. Partly because of the desperate economic situation in the country, what were once the leading institutions of conservatism are constrained. I think Arthur took no pleasure in this. I think he was embarrassed. I think he would have avoided it if he possibly could, but he couldn’t.”

I have known and liked David and Danielle Frum for many years, and what I am about to write will end that friendship. I regret that. But his statement goes beyond self-serving. It is a calumny against an organization that has treated him not just fairly but generously.

Regarding donor pressure: The idea that AEI donors sit down to talk with AEI’s president about who should and shouldn’t be on the staff, or what the staff should write, is fantasy. David has never seen the slightest sign of anything like that at AEI. He can’t have. He made it up. AEI has a culture, the scholars are fiercely proud of that culture, and at its heart is total intellectual freedom. As for the reality of that intellectual freedom, I think it’s fair to say I know what I’m talking about. I’ve pushed it to the limit. Arthur Brooks is just as adamant about preserving that culture as Chris DeMuth was, and Chris’s devotion to it was seamless.

" . . . and making such a sensational charge without a shred of evidence, is despicable."

Ouchie. That's gonna leave a mark.

frum needs to ask himself, why do the left support him so much if he’s such a great conservative. Great conservative receive the ire of leftist, not support or use your material to attack other conservatives. FRUM think about it

It appears that there isn’t a friend or conservative that Frum won’t consider throwing under the bus to help him fulfill his destiny of becoming the next Kevin Phillips - a pseudo-conservative paid handsomely by the left to attack his former colleagues from within. Frum must be made persona non grata at all conservative AND Republican functions.

Frum is an interfering bastard who pushed Obama onto America.

"Romney presidential campaign staffers…have been involved in spreading anti-Palin spin to reporters."

"Frum ... (Romney supporter called Gov. Palin’s) nomination a "huge mistake" October 13 (2008)"

Frum: "I will support (Romney) without qualm."

Frum now makes his living as the media's go-to basher of fellow Republicans”

"Frum ... (Romney supporter called Gov. Palin’s) nomination a "huge mistake" October 13 (2008)"

" 80 percent of Romney's former staff was absorbed by McCain
and these individuals were responsible for what amounts
to a premeditated, last-minute sabotage of Palin."

"These staffers are now out trying to finish her off
….hoping it would ingratiate themselves with Mitt Romney."

"the Palin Leaker from the McCain Campaign?
... was Nicolle Wallace's husband."

"Peeking Out From the McCain Wreckage: Mitt Romney"

"Someone's got to say it: IS MITT ROMNEY RESPONSIBLE FOR OBAMA'S VICTORY?"

"Vanity: Team Romney Sabotaged Palin and Continuing to Do So?"

"Romney Supporters Trashing Palin"

"Romney advisors sniping at Palin?"

Frum is a principled moderate.

His principle is being moderate.

Irrespective of where he lands politically, he has nothing of substance to say. He’s not worth an iota of attention — from the left or right.

Frum needs to research the statement "P!ss off the boss, pay the price." In a political organization the contributors are the boss. His continuous bashing of anyone to the right of Juan McCain has made the rank and file conservative furious. They reacted by withholding contributions until he was removed.

This is not a freedom of speach issue. Nobody is saying he cannot say what he wants. However if you has things that your boss doesn't like, expect to get fired.

Here, let’s peel that litmus paper off your head David. Sure enough, it looks pink.

But the elite isn’t leading anymore,” David is quoted as saying.

You only just figured that out? Voters have been screaming that message for over a year.

Partly because of the desperate economic situation in the country, what were once the leading institutions of conservatism are constrained.”,/i>

Hey David, you are no conservative. I see no difference David Frum’s policies and 0bama's policy ideas, and 0bama is by far the biggest left wing extremist ever to have occupied the White House.

Fee Fie Fo Frum! I smell the blood of a 'despicable' liberal weenie who has not the slightest bit of integrity, actually being called out by another moderate!

If anything I'm only sad at this revelation: "David resigned. He could have stayed."

Now that's sad.

David Frum tool of the year..... Talk about a sense of entitlement. No doubt he will become the latest version of Peggy Noonan or David Brock

Frum is a far left NDPer from Canada. He did not even bother getting his US citizehship until 2007 ( and who knows if it is dual).

The man was a two bit hack speech writer for one of the least gifted orators in presidential history. I do not care about his analysis. He felt entitled to a high paying job for doing nothing -—— nice going mister socialist. He is useless

What exactly is it one has to do or accomplish to be considered an intellectual today? Obviously accomplishment is not required.

AEI has a culture, the scholars are fiercely proud of that culture, and at its heart is total intellectual freedom.

How nice for them. All this while federal judges destroy the conservative culture that formed this country.

AEI was merely ticked off because David Frum didn't contribute more of his lefty ideas to the organization.

AEI is part of the problem.
