Why do I get the feeling BO/BS will use such incidents as an excuse to call for martial law or similar tactic some time in the future, possibly prior to the November elections?

You are probably correct. Martial Law for all conseratives on November 4, Everyone else is free to move about the country like the Roaming Gnome.
Same feeling here. I expect a Bill to be filed soon for the protection of all Senate and House members. I think that the ends have nothing to do with the means. Just another way for the critters to feel safe while voting against unconstitutional Bills. Or, could be for something else to come.
