I don’t see how any Catholic could ever vote for a Democrat.

That's alright. He will see them all when as a Christian he recognizes Good Friday and goes to church on Easter Sunday.
Should be a great photo-op

“...how any Catholic could ever vote for a Democrat”

Used to be the most natural thing in the world for solid working class Catholics such as my grandparents, only a generation removed from Ellis Island, to vote Democrat. It was only later on that the Dem party became the avatar of the breakdown in values.

When I recall those times (through Grandma’s retelling them), it seemed the most natural thing in the world was to work hard, pay as you go, attend church, join a lodge, raise the children to carry on moral values, and vote for the `party of the little guy’, although it would eventually become the `party of the wealthy liberal hypocrite’.

Then Ronald Reagan came on the scene and we discovered the real champion of ordinary folks.

Oversimplified but true, IMO.

My mother teaches at a Catholic School, I would say better then 90% of the parents at her school voted Democrat, and have for years. Makes no sense to me either.

A lot of Protties vote for dems as well, but having spent many family dinners with Catholic dems, including Nuns and some Priests with politics eventually being discussed, this is their rational:

Dems are "for the poor", welfare, universal health coverage, anti-capital punishment, anti-war, promote the sharing of earthly goods (Augustinian angle in enacting peace), the Party of FDR and Kennedy, dems "fight the good fight", etc... Facts do not matter, its all about perceptions, thanks to the MSN etc...

Repubs are "for the rich", against welfare and helping the poor, pro-capital punishment, pro-buisiness over charity, promote hoarding of earthly goods (Antithesis of Augustinian earthly peace), pro-war, the Party of Nixon (From the Jesuit's POV), just selfish and out for themselves Party, etc...

The abortion angle is most interesting. Yes, the dems promote abortion, but will rationalize, with some help from various Bishop's influences, that unless abortion is not your primary motivation to vote for a candidate, it is permitted to do so. Knowing that their primary reason to vote for a dem is not abortion, their conscious' are "clear". Also, many Catholic dems have pointed out that repubs, (I somewhat agree with this) use abortion to separate themselves in certain areas without the intention to go all in and overturn the legal murders. Some pro-life Repubs will pick at it, but abortion would be played out as a political angle, used to garner votes.

Remember, a lot of Nuns and Priests think the above is all poppycock as well, and do dissect the flawed thinking of the pro-democrat Catholics. I think many more Catholic dems are starting to reevaluate their voting habits as well. Obama, Pelosi, and Reid are a huge liars and that should resonate and tick-off some Catholic dems. In the case of one pro-Obama nun, perception has not intertwined with reality.
