Reid Unveils Mesquite Gas Plant Plans Construction To Create 1,000 Jobs

POSTED: 8:15 pm PDT March 22, 2010 UPDATED: 8:25 pm PDT March 22, 2010

MESQUITE, Nev. -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and others are announcing plans to build a natural gas plant near Mesquite.

Reid's office said Monday that Sithe Global Power had planned to build a coal-fired power plant at the Toquop site but abandoned that idea in favor of original plans to build a natural gas plant.

Reid's office said construction of the plant will take three years once it starts and will cost $1.4 billion while creating as many as 1,000 jobs.

Sithe is the Blackstone Group's portfolio company. Blackstone President and COO Tony James said the project will combine natural gas and solar power generation.

Mesquite Mayor Susan Holecheck said Monday it's everyone's responsibility to support energy sources that are better for the environment and that will employ more people at higher wages in the long run.

Anyone know anything about Blackstone? It's beating the odds on revenue intake.

At the rate the Obama administration is spending money (with Bernanke's tacit approval), in three years this plan will provide jobs at higher wages. And wages for burger flipping will be much higher. And the cost of a loaf of bread will be $5.

Thanks mlocher. Do you know anything about Blackstone? What are their affiliations? They’ve been doing really well on the market, therefore wondering if they’re an Obama creation, as money doesn’t discriminate.

Blackstone has been around since perhaps the mid 1980s. They are an excellent company, diversified in many dimensions in the financial industry. They own, or are significant owners in many corporations, they have a real estate division, have an investment division and I think they have a financial advisory division.

Sithe Global Power is mostly owned by Blackrock. I think Sithe is headquartered in Ontario, Canada.

There is a lot of politics in the type of fuel to drive the new generator. I think Sithe initially wanted coal, but protests were fairly large. The Canadians want to stay in the US and have changed their plans to be Nat Gas and solar. I don't think Blackrock per se called the shots, but rather Sithe is doing whatever it takes to get this facility in the US. In a sense, its a battle of the Loonies vs. the Loonies.

Thanks mlocher. I just did a bing and discovered that they’re having a big party for Nanzi. I also discovered they seem to involved with Karim Aga Khan...

I think we did to deep a little deeper on this Blackstone Group. They say they got the name from their own names but they are connected to Karim Aga Kham which makes me think Saudi and the Blackstone they worship.
