CHILDREN as young as one are being prescribed powerful anti-psychotic drugs that have been linked to deaths overseas.
The strong medication is designed to quell psychotic episodes normally experienced by adults with schizophrenia and bi-polar.
There are concerns some doctors are illegitimately writing scripts for pre-schoolers and primary school children for unapproved medical reasons, such as behavioural problems or ADHD.
Figures provided by the Therapeutic Goods Administration showed up to 3351 NSW children aged under 18 were prescribed the drugs in 2007-08.
Of them, at least 62 toddlers aged five and under - including five one-year-olds - were prescribed the drugs in NSW in that period.

Do you wanna give your kids Ritalin?
A head doc tried to give my teenage daughter risperdal once. Turned her into an absolute zombie.
after 2 days, I flushed ‘em.
that sh!t is for keeping mental patients from hurting themselves or something. It ain’t for kids!
OMG these drugs are not for children. Who the hell is letting this outrage continue.
Considering that babies’s brains are still forming at 1 year... it’s not unreasonable to think that any disruption/modification would be more far-reaching than a comparable adult-brain.
So, if I were a doctor I would think long & hard before prescribing drugs that change the functioning of the brain to a baby.
Most of these sort of drugs aren’t for children. I worry their livers will fail in their 30’s since they have been given drugs most of their lives.
Perhaps that's what it's all about? Getting rid of Useless Eaters?
There are some kids who definitely do benefit from Ritalin. There’s a lot more on it who don’t need it, and some for whom it has significant negative effects.
And this article has nothing to do with Ritalin which is not an antipsychotic, but a psychostimulant.
You mean they’ll die of liver failure and cirrhosis?
Yes, klling off the useless eaters.
Corrupt doctors.
Parents and teachers. Drugging them is easier. Plus, some actually like the stimulant effect. I once overheard a doctor tell a drug rep that parents were complaining about one of the drugs because it didn’t give the “kick” that they were accustomed to. Not sure who was really taking the meds...the kids or the parents. ;)
You know what this means. No more family vacations abroad. :-\
Ritalin is a stimulant type drug. Ritalin and adderall are needed for many people for ADD. They might be over-prescribed, but are helpful for many.
The drugs that are discussed in this article are anti-psychotic type. Totally different class of drugs.
Psyc drugs are extremely useful and necessary if used when needed and prescribed with knowledge and care.
UH HUH, new drug source the kids.
