“Flim-flam” Jim Slattery (D-kansas) tried that after being the last Congressman to vote for Clinton's tax increase. He was soundly defeated by Graves (of course that was Kansas, this is Michigan).

Stupak will retire and run for governor. That just gives him a larger pool of angry voters to be rejected by. It also means that the turnout for the gubernatorial election will be larger than normal.
