To be fair to Lincoln, he needs to be judged in the context of the times. Right or wrong, most likely a little of both, he did hold the "United States" together and I think for the better. Many arguments have been made on both sides of the issue whether he was a tyrant or savior. He did save a nation

In the context of today political environment, I see it more of a battle to stop from being moved to one form of government to another by force rather than the question of who gets liberty. In the long run all Americans lose their liberties to a certain degree rather than answering the question of can states sanction slavery and the right to be a sovereign entity
