WW2: The Most Racist Generation?
The Washington Times ^ | March 19, 2010 | Editorial

Posted on 03/18/2010 8:57:28 PM PDT by Abakumov

Was the "Greatest Generation" just a bunch of racists? Actor and producer Tom Hanks, promoting his new World War II series "The Pacific," suggested that the war with Japan was really all about American intolerance; and by the way, so is the war on terrorism.

In several interviews, Mr. Hanks presented a version of World War II in which racism played the dominant role. The Japanese "were out to kill us because our way of living was different," he told Time magazine. "We, in turn, wanted to annihilate them because they were different." Forget Pearl Harbor, the Bataan Death March and Tokyo's territorial expansionism. The United States was really fighting a war against human diversity, according to the former star of "Bosom Buddies."

The only country that can surrender better than Italy is France!

So what ... do you think the Italians should have fought fiercely for Fascism?

You remember what they did to Mussolini, when they got the chance?

Sure it is. Hollywood movies are a huge part of American and post 19th century Western Culture.

Almost all of the WW2 talk is about Germany and Japan. Italians really get a break!

If the Italians of WW2 get a break, what do the Romanians, Hungarians, and Finns get? They were *all* members of the Axis, voluntarily, and go unnoticed.

The only Axis member I'd be willing to cut slack would be the Finns, as the entered the Axis solely because they had been invavded by "Uncle Joe" (Stalin), and of all the Axis members, did not participate in the Nazis' evil programs. They were the only Axis member to actually pay off their war reparations, as well...

It was sardonic humor - nothing more.

Didn't the Finns make a point of not being known as one of the Axis but merely co-belligerent?

They might have made that point, but in the histories I'd read, no such real disctinction is made. According to the Allies, they were a member of the Axis...

You highly overrate Hollywood’s influence. Many people could care less about what Hollywood thinks.

I’m not talking about what actors say on talk shows but the influence American films have here and all over the world.

Only in your mind and some others. Hollywood is not as important as you think.

Are American books important? American music? Then so are American films.

And speaking as an immigrant...American movies were/are huge overseas. They are our #1 cultural export by far.

The problem I had with the first episode was that it was very disjointed.

No more film revenue for you, Mr. Hanks! I’m through buying your movies.

I was always suspicious of “The Band of Brothers” series because I knew who was behind it. You cannot love the Vets when you are a bleeding heart died in the wool liberal. It's just not possible. Tom just proved that.

Jerks!

"Band of Brothers is a 2001 ten-part television World War II miniseries based on the book of the same title written by historian and biographer Stephen Ambrose"

Specifically, what did you find objectionable?

I always knew Hanks and Spielberg were evil and were cashing in on WW2 vets. Ditto Tom Brokaw. Those old WW2 guys were just “racists” in their eyes.

The media/hollywood are so evil.

BoB is biographical, much more so than the The Pacific. The actual people who fought in the 501st E. Co. were portrayed as well as the events that made them revered by many. Not a compilation of characters and events like The Pacific.

The vets themselves were interviewed and were included in all of the episodes in BoB. I would suspect that they gave their approvals to their portrayals in the series.

I understand The Pacific is “based on” actual folks and events. That is a big difference between the two.
