Rules Panel Dem To Vote Against Bill (It's Far From Over!)
National Journal ^ | 03/18/2010 | Erin McPike

Posted on 03/18/2010 9:26:42 AM PDT by Rational Thought

A key House Dem has begun informing party leaders he plans to vote against health care legislation both on the House floor and in the rules committee, on which he sits.

Rep. Michael Arcuri (D-NY), a sophomore Dem who had a tougher-than-expected re-election bid in '08, has told the Dem caucus he will vote against the bill.

He becomes the 3rd member, along with Reps. Joe Donnelly (D-IN) and Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), to have switched from supporting the first bill, in Nov., to opposing the Senate version.

Arcuri's vote will not hurt the bill's chances in committee, where Dems hold a 9-4 advantage over GOPers. The panel's other 8 Dems all voted for the first version of health care, and only Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-CA) voted in favor of the Stupak amendment.

But Arcuri's decision could make Speaker Nancy Pelosi's goal of winning the 216 votes necessary for passage all the more difficult. Sources say Dems remain short of the votes necessary for passage, but that they have not reached their goal yet.

Finally a tad of good news. Outside, the sun is shining and it’s a beautiful day. But the news sure has been gloomy.

"...where Dems hold a 9-4 advantage over GOPers. "

Because the Dems have been so hamstrung trying to get this thing passed, it's easy to forget that they enjoy a 79-seat advantage in the House. But, when you see the committee makeup at 9-4, the reality becomes stark.

Boehner has his problems, but you have to give credit where credit is due. He's done a great job holding the GOP caucus in line throughout this last year, when it would have been VERY easy to fold. The fact of the matter is, without the parliamentary tactics available to the minority in the Senate, the House minority really is powerless.

The lapdog media is attempting to create momentum and the perception that it’s a done deal, might as well give in.

Yeah...I got a little excited too- til I read this:

Rules Committee Democrat Will Vote No [Daniel Foster]

Hotline reports that Rep. Mike Arcuri (D., N.Y.), a sophomore who had a tough go of it in 2008, will vote nay on Obamacare, both on the House floor and in the Rules Committee. The Rules vote is symbolic, since Democrats outnumber Republicans there two-to-one. But the floor vote could go either way. It is obviously a blow to Pelosi's chances of hitting 216. But just as often, the fact that a vulnerable junior member votes against the Speaker signals that the Speaker can afford to let him do so.

Listen to Rush now, he says that Hoyer claim about CBO numbers is a complete fraud because the CBO hasn’t seen the actual bill yet (nor has anyone else).

I don’t think Pelosi can afford to give Altmire a pass, nor would she want his NO vote in committee for the broader signal it sends

Keep calling or visiting district offices - beg your friends and family to help

If this were released the day of the vote, I would agree with the point. Being released at least 3 days before the vote indicates to me this is not a signal from the Speaker.

I am not so sure that this logic holds true any more. Voting taxpayers are getting madder than anything. This thing passes, in any manner or form, and anyone with a D behind their name is fair game. The GOP won't be doing the hunting; grass roots organizations will be, though. Guilt by association will be the watch words of the day for every Dem out there.

That's my opinion; your mileage may vary.

It’s not good news. It says it won’t pass the rules committee. This is about the Slaughter deem and pass bill.

It says Arcuri will oppose the Senate version of Obamacare. But the Slaughter rule will make it possible to never have to vote on the Senate Bill.

So it’s not good news in the sense that the Slaughter Rule is ready for passage.

More blood in the water. This is going to start getting very, very ugly now, my friends; the Beast has been bearded in his own den, and his nose bloodied, he will come back at us with the full fury of his fetid claws. Keep up the good fight, keep up the calls, and, to paraphrase poor Henry V yet again,

Once more into the breach, my friends, once more into the breach.

Rush read the CBO report and they state these numbers are only Estimates because they do not have the data to state for certain what the costs are... and that these number represent only an estimate based on incomplete data... IOW a frickin’ dim lie!

Come on over to the right side for the American people. We only need a few more for this thing to die. No wonder Nancy is looking like her last facelift fell!
