Why is the US census so much focussed on a single community, i.e. Hispanics?

It seems like state-mandated discrimination against the others, to me.

E Pluribus Unum, anyone?

I think it’s because Hispanics are not a “race” per se. They are an ethnic group and, I believe, are technically white unless there’s a mixed race situation so they have to ask a separate question.

Not trying to start argument folks...just trying to answer the question as I understand it.
