Governor Chris Christie Eliminates Funding for Planned Parenthood in Proposed FY 11 Budget

Dear Pro-Life Friends:

Governor Christie delivered his budget address today for the 2011 budget. Among the programs he proposed completely eliminating was funding for family planning.  Planned Parenthood dominates the network of family planning organizations in New Jersey.  Last year, Corzine allocated $7.6M to family planning agencies.  NJ has the second highest rate of teen abortions in the nation.  For years, Planned Parenthood has been part of the problem and not the solution.

Planned Parenthood promotes abortion and refers minors for abortion without parental involvement.  Two of the Planned Parenthood organizations which receive family planning money also perform abortions.  Although they claim that funding for family planning is kept separate and not used for abortion, all funds are fungible.  Their clinics make a profit for& referring for abortion and then they refer the minor girl to one of their clinics that perform abortions.  It's time this gravy train ended. Taxpayers should not be funding this organization.  Governor Christie should be commended for this courageous move.

Please write, email and fax the Governor to thank him.  609-292-6000, Fax:  609 292 3454.

E-mail the Governor, click  here.  Choose "Health" from the drop down topic menu.

Below are excerpts of a  Press release from Planned Parenthood about the proposed elimination of funding.

Thank you,

Marie Tasy
Executive Director
New Jersey Right to Life

Michele Jaker, Executive Director, Family Planning Association of New Jersey:

"Gov. Christie's misguided budget cuts hurt women and costs the state money. Investing in women's health is not only good policy, it helps save money. Each public dollar spent to provide family planning services saves an estimated $4 that would otherwise be spent in Medicaid related costs alone. So, for the money saved by eliminating state funding for women's health care the state will pay at least $28 million more in Medicaid expenses. It just makes no sense."

"The best way to prevent unintended pregnancies and promote healthy families is to invest in family planning, and ensure that women and families have access to affordable, quality reproductive health care. Instead, Governor Christie wants to completely eliminate critical funds that reduce the number of unintended pregnancies. New Jersey already ranks 36th in public support for reproductive health care and this proposed budget will put us back even further."

Governor Christie's FY11 state budget proposes the complete elimination of state funding for family planning services. Last year, this budget line allocated over $7 million for basic reproductive health care services including routine gynecological exams; basic contraception; screening for high blood pressure, anemia and diabetes; breast and cervical cancer screening and education; screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs); HIV testing and counseling; pre-pregnancy counseling and education; pregnancy testing and confirmation; and prenatal care and/or referral. State dollars are not used for abortion services.
