'Uglier and uglier' The final drive to ObamaCare
NY Post ^ | March 16, 2010 | Rich Lowry

The finale of the health-care debate couldn't be more fit ting. House Democrats are considering passing an exotic parliamentary rule relieving them of the burden of voting for the underlying bill, which will be "deemed" passed.

So a bill sold under blatantly false pretenses and passed in the Senate on the strength of indefensible deals would become law in a final flourish of deceptive highhandedness. How appropriate for what would be the worst piece of federal domestic legislation since the recovery-impairing National Recovery Act of 1933 or the Prohibition disaster in 1920.

After Scott Brown's victory, Democrats claimed to understand how the ugly process had undermined support for the bill. Yet since then, (to paraphrase Alice) it's gotten uglier and uglier.

I write with a larger point.

I motivate it with two questions. First, What Democratic Party luminaries have stepped up this week to defend the health care bill on its underlying merits? Second, What other Democrat-leaning institutions have stepped up ...?

The answer to the first question, so far as I can tell, is zero. Which is astonishing to me. The answer to the second question is that after looking around and around I can find no more than a handful of statements — and that’s if I’m being generous in the way I count.

The Dems must know of the need for this. And if we go back a couple of weeks, the evidence is there. Orszag has a piece in the Washington Post from early March. Baucus has something somewhere from early March, as well. There are other examples.

But this week? Hmmmm ... Here it is, crunch time, and there is nothing in the Washington Post, NYTimes, LATimes, etc. from any real luminary, saying “This is a good bill. I’m proud to stand up and defend it.”

Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot being written along the lines of “Ram it through.” A lot of Dems are saying that this just has to get done, or that this is better than nothing, or whatever. There is rationalization about reconciliation. But look around ... Who is really defending this piece of crap legislation? Everything I read from those who support this bill includes a mountain of caveats, qualifiers, hedging, ...

So who is really defending this bill?

The answer is that here we are ... crunch time ... and there really doesn’t seem to be anyone in the Democratic Party or any of its machinery that is standing up to say that they are proud to be supporting this bill.

The bill is getting trashed and trashed and trashed and trashed. So why is no one among the Dems willing to stand and deliver that basic defense of this bill?

Answer: Because it is an unmitigated disaster, whether it passes or not. And every Dem knows it and is either keeping the lowest possible profile or covering their arse.

They will probably do the same thing on Immigation "reform". I'm sickened and disgusted with this administration and can only pray that when the time comes to vote that some will be moved to vote against this abhorant piece of legislation

“By such means did Chavez become dictator.”

Make no mistake...AMERICANS WILL NOT ALLOW THAT TO HAPPEN HERE. If the mob in Washington goes forward with this without a vote, just watch what will happen. They think we Americans are too distracted from one day to the next to pay attention to Washington D.C..Too complex, they think, for our stupid little minds to grasp. Well, Americans are watching this health care scheme moment by moment because they are not convinced that this is a health care plan but, is, instead, a plan to complete a revolution. That is why this government refuses to listen to the people. Washington D.C. has become our adversary.

If this passes the wrath of voters will be felt from Washington to every state capitol. I still can’t imagine that Democrats are so naive to believe that voters will be grateful for them passing this mess. Pelosi and Reid are asking Congressional Democrats to line up for their poisoned kool-aid

This is a tax bill hiding as a health care bill. The taxes and fees go in place immediately and the government will have these new sources of revenue to spend for 4 years before the bill goes into effect. Does anyone really believe the funds collected the first four years will be “saved” to offset costs in the out years? Of course not, it will be just like Social Security. However, the claims of the bill being cost neutral or cost saving in its first 10 years requires those 4 years of revenue without any expenses during those years.

Given the funds collected in years 1-4 will be redeployed to new spending for uses other than health care, health care will require massive new taxes or drastic spending cuts and care rationing when it is finally implemented in 2014. If the dollar isn’t destroyed by 2014, the implementation of this measure will certainly finish it off.

It is sham any way you look at it.

Excellent point. If this really were a good, decent, or even so-so bill there would be people defending it, extolling its virtues. Instead, all we hear about is "We have to do something" (ie. crisis mode again) and "We have to pass this by any means necessary."

You're right that they are strangely quiet on the merits of this actual bill. This is "the something" they want to do, but they don't want to talk about it. They don't even want to post it. Instead they post a dummy "shell" bill that everyone knows bears no resemblance to the final form.

In short, the Democrats know they are screwing us over and they are rightfully ashamed of it. What they should be is rightfully afraid of it. I hope and pray that regardless of how this fight turns out, the Democrats get virtually slaughtered in the next couple of election cycles.

The American voter, you, me, and the nice people next door, need to send a message to the power-drunk elites (ie. the Democrats) in Washington: you work for us and we don't want your liberty stealing, socialist, big-government, ill-conceived and un-affordable policies. Lets not elect a single Democrat in the next several election cycles. Send a message loud and clear to all politicians. When you so blatantly ignore the electorate (us), you will be put out of a job ASAFP.

According to F&F this AM, ‘Rat congressional staffers have been supplied with talking points to “persuade” tea partiers who will be descending on the Capitol today in an effort to convince them of the utility of the bill and, instead of blowing them off or insulting them, try to change their minds and make Obamacare supporters out of them.

I’m dying to read those talking points, aren’t you? I have no doubt that they are models of detailed analysis and compelling logic. /s

You are absolutely correct!!

This is the reason that they are pushing this come hell or high water. They've now spent and are spending trillions and need an immediate influx of tax dollars or we're in deep, deep, do do. If it doesn't pass, we are in immediate financial straights and if it does pass, those financial earthquakes are kicked down the road to the next administration.

I've been watching this charade for some time now and your point on this is exact and insightful.

The people and money behind this don't care how many or who lose their jobs over this. Once passed the bell can't be unrung. They will then have the control they want.

Not only are they passing a bill without a vote but they are passing a bill that hasn't even been written yet. After the fact they can make it say whatever they want.

Hopefully so. There are many domestic enemies that should be "Ceauşescu'ed".
