The accidental president, who then proceeded to make himself a president for life. Mubarak only became president because Anwar Sadat got shot by a bunch of Islamic crazies. Turns out he loves power more than even Mobutu did. As far as I can tell, he is now by far the longest serving Egyptian president in history, by far.

I wouldn't base ANYTHING on what a hundred Arabic (or any other) Twits say.

At some point, there has to be what I call an “Archduke Ferdinand Moment”. Not necessarily anything other than a random event that leads down a chain of causality.

Later, people point back and say, “Here... Here is where It all began...”

Yeah, he was pretty much a dictator, but he wasn't too bad for a dictator.

In the sewer that is the greater Islamic middle east, he was practically a Washington or Jefferson.

Yep, it is almost a certainty that whoever follows him will be far worse.

Succinct observation, sad but true.

If he *is* 81 and *is* having surgery it could be bad. With an 81 year old *every* surgical procedure is potentially life threatening.

Possibly. If his disastrous visit to Israel is any indication, we could be in for some classic Biden comedy times in Egypt as well.

I had no idea he was still around and in that part of the world, that is a GOOD thing. Less we hear from leaders over there, the better.

“Biden’s first State Funeral in the works now?”

He's scrambling looking for translators that speak “Egyptian”.

Excellent question. I did a litle searching around and I get the feeling the Egypt’s armed forces are more of the status quo variety than Islamist in nature - particularly the officers corps.

But from the same articles I read, I don’t doubt there’s a strain of Islamist thinking in some parts of the Egyptian military. I’m just not sure that it’s strong enough to effect a coup if they chose to.

If it is a breach of protocol to wear yellow at an Egyptian funeral, Plugs will be wearing yellow.

If it is a breach of protocol to wear brown shoes to an Egyptian funeral, Plugs will be wearing brown shoes.

If it is a breach of protocol ... you get the picture

Don’t be so quick to judge. If Mubarak hadn’t seized power and held it, we’d have the Islamic Republic of Egypt today.
