As I wrote before, the issue is not "How self-labelled 'Conservative' American voters view themselves".
The issue is how some "Holier-And-More-Conservative-Than-Thou", self-proclaimed "Conservatives" on FR view anybody that is one single inch to the Left of them as "RINO's" and the Devil incarnate.
Forty percent of Americans may label themselves "Conservatives".
"Holier-And-More-Conservative-Than-Thou", self-proclaimed "Conservatives" like rabscuttle385 label the majority of those voters as "RINO's".
"If they are one quarter inch to the Left of me, they are RINO's and they are no different than Barack Hussein Obama!"
That is the self-destructive agenda that rabscuttle385 pushed in 2008 and look where it got us. It got us Barack Hussein Obama as President of the United States.
True, John McCain is not as Conservative as those of us on Free Republic. Not by a long shot. Be that as it may, John McCain is MILES to the Right of Barack Hussein Obama.
Yet, even after the primaries were over and even though the choices were:
A.) John McCain & Sarah Palin
or
B.) Barack Hussein Obama & Joe Biden
Rabscuttle385 was still attacking and attacking and attacking McCain prior the the Presidential elections. Even after the election, he is STILL attacking John McCain!
Today, over one year after Barack Hussein Obama was inaugurated President of the United States, ; rabscuttle385 is still not attacking Barack Hussein Obama. He is still attacking John McCain.

My point is that the vast majority of American voters are not going to be as Conservative as those of us on FR. Most self-proclaimed "Conservatives" in the American electorate would be labeled "RINO's" by people like rabscuttle385.
If we automatically attack anybody to the Left of where rabscuttle385 allegedly is, we are guaranteeing ourselves an electoral defeat of Biblical proportions.
America has moved to the Left since the days of Ronald Reagan. I might not like that. You might not like that. But, that's the way it is.
It may well be the most American voters view Romney as"Conservative" as opposed to Far-Far-Left Barack Hussein Obama.
Be that as it may, rest assured that, even after the primaries are over and the choices are:
A.) Mitt Romney
or
B.) Barack Hussein Obama
Rabscuttle385 will be attacking and attacking and attacking Romney and helping put Barack Hussein Obama into the White House in 2012 just as he helped put Barack Hussein Obama into the White House in 2008.
