I didn't mention that the purges were also a large part of the reason why two and a half million Soviet troops, if I remember the figure correctly, couldn't walk over Finland with a wartime total population of only three and a half million.

Today, BTW, is the 70th anniversary of the end of the Winter War.

Add me to your list. I was drafted by JFK in 1961 when the commies built that wall around E. Berlin.

It IS in their interests to create areas of destabilization and buffer zones of those unfriendly towards the West.

No. This is an error. What they have done is not in their interest and has already backfired on them badly. Russia's stupid and evil invasion of Georgia has destabilized the entire Caucasus and advanced the cause of ethnic separatism all over Russia itself. Russia's problems in the North Caucasus have only increased since Russia's genocidal invasion of Christian Georgia. Russia will pay for unleashing their pet Chechen muslim red army jihadists against Georgia. They never learned from Beslan. Beslan was blowback from when Russia supported Shamil Basayev's jihad against Georgian in Abkhazia in the early nineties. Now there will be more Beslans.

......sarcastic, whiny reply.

You are accurate there, and I apologize. You may call upon me at any time for directions to any historical source or reference materials at my disposal.

I've read the replies on both your threads ETL. I have to go along with those who support our participation in celebrating the 65th anniversary of VE Day. What a monumental event VE Day was for those of us who lived through those war years and what a horrible price we paid!! If it were up to me, I'd airlift to Moscow, The Old Guard, 1/3 Battalion, along with a hundred surviving GIs from the Battle for Berlin. Our State Dept. would host a banquet for the old vets from all countries present and provide interpreters for the exchange of war stories. The Old Guard would march in the parade in their dress blues with chrome bayonets fixed on their rifles. What a terrific photo-op having our troops marching armed through the Kremlin - far more desirable than having Russian troops marching armed through DC, no?

Sends a terrible message. Not only in light of the 10s of millions of people killed at the hands of the Soviet Union, but in terms of what Russia has been up to since (supporting and supplying damn near every enemy we’ve ever had). And with this 80s-era pro-Soviet communist radical as our president, a guy who’s bending over backwards to appease KGB Putin on many fronts, it’s downright sickening.
