Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer went on the defense Monday night after U.S. Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl and former Scottsdale congressman J.D. Hayworth said they opposed a temporary 1-cent sales tax hike to deal with budget deficits.
Brewer said if voters do not approve the May 18 referendum, Arizona will have to cut $1 billion from schools and public safety.
The Arizona Legislature and I have already adopted the largest permanent spending reductions in state history well over $2 billion permanently reduced, out of what was once a $10 billion annual budget, with the adoption of this years plan, she said. Cutting another $1 billion from our childrens classrooms, or from law enforcement and first responders, is no solution. The consequences are far too severe. Nor is borrowing billions more, and saddling our children and our childrens children with the payments, Brewer said in a statement.

Temporary like the Spanish-American War telephone excise tax, eh?
These people think the answer to everything is more and more taxes. They should consider the idea of stop spending and the people should be demanding it. Cut the budgets, cut spending, balance the budget or cut your job.
You mean all of the BS programs will have to go and the schools will have to get back to basics. 3 R’s.
No, temporary like the Victory Tax.
Brewer said if voters do not approve the May 18 referendum, Arizona will have to cut $1 billion from schools and public safety.

Yep thats all you need to know about this RINO. I wonder 100% of Arizona’s budget is education and cops?????
In Ok, the libtards are telling my daughter who teaches that teachers will lose jobs if a tax increase is not passed, and if I recall Repub’s hold most of the power there! IDIOTS!
Or, we could cut another 1 billion from other things, like the inflated bureaucracy, speed cameras, free schooling and medical care for illegals, grants to 'arts' groups, etc.
Of course, there might be another way to make up that billion-dollar shortfall. Arizonas illegal immigrant population costs the states taxpayers about $1.3 billion per year for education, medical care and incarceration. Even if the estimated tax contributions of illegal immigrant workers are subtracted, net outlays still amount to about $1.3 billion per year. The annual fiscal burden borne by Arizonans amounts to more than $700 per household headed by a native-born resident. Cleaning out the illegal infestation would go a long way toward balancing the state’s budget.
Was at a Republican Forum Mtg. in Kingman, AZ Tuesday night where she spoke. She’s one tough lady and you should’ve heard what she had to say about Obamacare!
Then start cutting. Cut, cut, cut.
Brewer is no RINO. You have no idea what you’re talking about.
Her next year’s budget cut 2.6 bil in spending.
AZ is so broke they are giving up federal money because they can’t afford the state funds to get it. And Brewer has been cutting many programs where there are matching funds.
there are state education high school graduation requirements that require more than just the 3rs.
Then cut some more.
You know following the law and good and all but where in the US are school officials allowed to ask children citizenship before they can be enrolled?
I take it your from AZ. I get so tired of reading posts from out of staters who have absolutely no idea about how it is here in AZ.
Everyone is endorsing our State Treas Martin over Brewer but one little fact not known about Martin is he voted to pass three out of four state budgets while Napitolano was Governor. Martin has some blame to share for the big mess we are in.
Cutting is fine. But because our Republican held state house and senate didn’t do their jobs, statewide propositions were passed to allow spending. It would take 2/3 to override them.
I would rather hear him defend spending cuts.
“Then cut some more.”
2.6 bil is about 1/3 of our entire state budget. Just where would you suggest we cut some more and still follow state proposition mandates.
You’re from VA you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.
Another out of stater. Him is a Her.
