John Conyers, Monica’s husband, supported a controversial Papas-operated, hazardous-waste injection well in Romulus that he previously opposed.

Papas testified he paid Riddle $10,000 in July 2007 after Monica Conyers showed him a letter from her husband supporting the well.

Prosecutors presented secretly recorded phone conversations and other evidence to support their case that Riddle and Conyers teamed up as “political pirates” to plunder business people with matters pending before the City Council or the General Retirement System.

Riddle’s trial, which ended in a hung jury and is set for a redo in July, heard evidence that Conyers would regularly eat at Mosaic in Greektown and refuse to pay her bill, frequently hit up a city developer for cash for shopping trips and her child’s tuition, and on one occasion shocked Melvin Washington of the Phoenix Group by reaching into his pocket in public and grabbing a wad of cash.

Rep. Conyers misses House votes today, last night

Washington — Rep. John Conyers, D-Detroit, missed today’s first votes as his wife was sentenced in relation to a bribery conspiracy.

Conyers, the 80-year-old chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, missed three votes today and all three votes last night.

“Notice how little news it’s making (inside the Beltway),” Sabato said of Conyers’ family troubles. “People now see us as living in an era of couples with two careers, with each responsible for their own behavior.

“He’s given a pass. He’s secure in his district and with the (Democratic) leadership.”
